The death has occurred in Auckland Hospital of Mr Edmund Charles Browne, aged 71, widower, of Parnell, as the result a£ head injuries, received in a motor collision in the city late on Monday night. Mr Browne was well-known in Auckland business circles, being managing director of the mercery firm of C. Browne, Ltd.Press Assn.

Coop (Canterbury).

The death occurred last evening, at the Grey River Hospital, of Frederick William Felix, aged 56 years, a native of Hokitika. Deceased had worked as ? a railway surfaceman for the past 25 years, the last two years being at Camerons. He was, single. His. parents predeceased him,. He is survived by two brothers, E. Felix of | Christchurch, and F. Felix, Kaikoura, and one sister, Mrs R. Percy, Christchurch. Mr H. Hoffman, Greymouth, is a. cousin. The funeral will take place at Hokitika on Saturday afternoon.

A Wellington telegram announced the death of Edwin Bezar, ex-Sergeant Major, of the 57th West Middlesex Regiment, known as the “Die Hards,” in his 997th year. The “Die Hards” took an active part in suppressing that section of the Maori rebellion which kept the settlers of Taranaki Province in a fever of unrest in the early ’sixties. Bezar served in the Crimea with the Wiltshire Regiment. He was transferred to the “Die Hards” in 1857. He served at Aden during the Indian mutiny, and later in 1860 went to India, whence the regiment was despatched the same year to New Zealand. When in 1866, the 58th were recalled to England, he took his discharge in the colony, as Colour Sergt. When in 1868, the Maoris again threatened trouble on the West Coast (N. 1. he was appointed Sergt.-Major in the Wanganui district. He remained with the Defence Department till 1892, when he retired, and had lived at Wellington ever since.
