ARMY CODE STOLEN
NEW ONE SUBSTITUTED. CAIRO, October 29. It has just been revealed that the secret code of the Egyptian Army was stolen at the beginning of September and has never been found. A new code had to be substituted. It appears that the Ministry of War sent it in a large sealed envelope marked “Most Secret,” by a soldier, to the commanding officer of an infantry battalion at Abbassia. On his arrival the soldier handed the envelope to the sergeant on duty, who kept it and later handed it to his superior officer. The officer resealed' it in a second envelope and placed it in a drayver to await the arrival of the colonel. When the colonel opened the envelope the code was not there. The sergeant and the soldier were arrested and appeared yesterday before a military court, which has not yet given judgment. The inquiry established that the code was abstracted on the route from the War Office to Abbassia, but the object of the theft and the instigators have not been ascertained 1 .
