MODERN CHURCH
HOOTER INSTEAD OF BELL. LONDON, October 12. A new church at Cranford, Middlesex, which the Bishop of Kensington, Dr. Simpson, will dedicate this afternoon, may have a hooter _ instead of bells’ to call parishioners to 'the services. A gong, the broadcasting ot Bow Bells, or an electrical buzzer are also being considered by the Rev. Maurice Child, who will have charge of the new church. “1 want something more modern than bells,” he said yesterday to a representative of “The Daily Telegraph/’ “The church has been built, entirely by local workmen, for £l,OOO. It has been put together from sections. I am hoping that a larger church will be built later. The present one would then be turned into a hall.” The church looks like one of the semi-circular Nissen huts used. • for housing soldiers during the war. The building of it occupied only three weeks.
The interior is illuminated by concealed lights, which can. be dimmed during the sermon. The Avails will be lined with insulating material painted in different colours. The altar of white concrete is approached by black steps, and will be floodlighted. A glass offertory box is among the innovations.
