• The engagement is announced of Hilda Francis, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Kitching, Shakespeare Street, and Ivan Dormer, second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Delaney, Cobden.
A telegram from Tauranga announced the death of Mrs. Eleanor Ann Jordan, widow of Canon Charles Jordan, aged ninety-nine. She went to Tauranga with her husband who was the first vicar of Tauranga, in 1872. She is survived by one son and two daughters.
Mr. G. R. Harker, who has been President of the West Coast Master Bakers’ Association, for the past 15 years, was presented with a pipe and a smoker’s outfit at a recent meeting of the Association, in recognition. of his valuable service. The presentation was made by Mr. A. Shannon, and Mr. Harker suitably responded. :
Tributes were paid to the memory of the late Earl Jellicoe in both Houses of Parliment (stated an Official Wireless) when motions were approved for the erection of a monument at public charge, as an expression of admiration for his illustrious naval career and gratitude for his service to the State.
Father J. Hanrahan, of St. Joseph’s Church, Papanui, will celebrate next Wednesday, the silver jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood. Father Hanrahan received his early education in Ashburton, and went from there to Holy Cross College at Mosgiel. His first appointment was as a curate under Bishop Grimes at the Christchurch Cathedral. Two years later he was given the parish of Ross. He later went to Ahaura, and after a term there, successfully conducted the Lincoln and Darfield parishes. Eleven years ago he was appointed to Papanui.
The" death occurred, last evening, at his residence, Sturge Street, Cobden, of Cornelius Francis Sexton, a native of Westport, aged 63 years. Deceased, who had resided on the West Coast all his life, had, for the past 20 years, been employed as a bridge carpenter, by the Railway Department. He had been ailing for the past three months. In his youth, he was a prominent footballer. He is survived by his wife, three sons, William (Nelson), Gordon (Auckland), and Percy (Cobden) and one daughter, Miss Irene Sexton (Cobden) • also three brothers, John. (Rewanui), Philip (Westport) and William (Wanganui), and two sisters, Mrs. J. Mohan (Wellington), and Miss Marv Sexton (Westport). The interment will take place privately on Monday. -
