AMERICA’S CUP
CHALLENGE WITHDRAWN. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.} (Recd. November 27, 10.30 a.m.) . LONDON, November 26. Announcing he has withdrawn his challenge for the America’s Cup in 1936, Mr. Fairey protested against the attitude to the contest adopted by the Americans. “The race is now reduced to a contest between expensive yachts, which only syndicates can normally afford. American entries are all syndicated, whereas British yachts are privately entered. If the American attitude is to remain unmodified, it is difficult to see how any private owner will be able to afford to compete. I challenged with a 100 ton yacht because I feel the race would be more sporting if less expensive boats could be entered. The New York Yacht Club told my representative that my challenge was not acceptable and not orthodox. I therefore have withdrawn and left the field to Mr. Sopwith, if he wishes to challenge.”
