SKYSCRAPER RAFFLES
CIGARETTES TO CALM VICTIMS
NEW YORK, October 7. '
A skyscraper Raffles, who comforts his victims with cigarettes, is being eagerly sought by the . Now York, police. His latest exploit occurred this week-end on the twentyninth floor of an exclusive hotel overlooking Central Park. Here, with consummate coolness, and perfect politeness, he robbed a visitor from the South, Mrs Deene Carmuche, of £l,OOO worth of jewels and a large sum in cash. Walking into her room at seven o’clock in the evening on the pretext that he was an hotel messenger, he threatened the woman with a revolver and forced her into the bath room, where he tied her up with two pairs of silk stockings. “Yon seem nervous,” he. said with a laugh. Lighting a cigarette, he stuck it in, her mouth and then removed rings from her fingers and money from her desk. Apologising profoundly, he removed the cigarette, and, after gagging his victim 'with a towel and turning on the wireless as loud as possible, he departed.
