BOUND AND GAGGED
W’TON MAN ATTACKED. [PER press association.] WELLINGTON, November 16. Mr E. R. Newman, of 159, Darlington Road, Miramar, was surprised lapt evening by the switching off of the bathroom light while he was washing. Naturally enough he looked out to see what was happening, and was met with a blow. He recovered to find himself being effectively bound, with a, sashcord by a tall, well-built man who further stuffed a handkerchief into his mouth, and took another from a drawer to secure the in position. His feet were drawn up almost to the. small of his back and his hands were drawn beneath his legs. Afterwards he managed to roll himself to the verandah and there he was found by Mr Frank Alexander, an em-
ployee from a. nearby store, who was brought by two small girls who were afraid to pass the- house because “there was a drunk man on the verandah.’’ Mr Alexander cut the cords and removed the gag, but Mr Newman could neither speak nor walk for some little time. Mr Alexander said that the binding was the work of an expert. There were no loose ends at which a start could 'bo made in easing the bonds, I and one of the knots appeared to have been prepared beforehand. Mrs Newman was out, but returned at 10 o’clock, two hours after the attack. She says that the intruder must have been disturbed, as nothing | was 'taken.
The Terminus Store, where Mr Alexander works, was the scene of an assault last May on the proprietor. Mr J. E. Furness.
