BANDS’ CONTEST

RESULTS AT OAMARU

OAMARU, November 17

Record crowds attended the Quickstep at the Show Grounds and the Test Selections at the Opera House and Oamaru Gardens in the first band contest held in Oainaru for many years past. The contest was open to 0. and B. Grade bands and pipe bands of Otago and Southland. With line weather, the contest was an unqualified success.

The judge of tire brass section (Mr. R. .1. Estall, Christchurch), highly commended the Quickstep performance, and said the selections were a delightful surprise, and the playing of “Carmen” had astounded him, for 13 Grad’U bands. It hud been a musical treat, and he considered the future of bands very high in New Zealand, when there were such artistic talented performances given by the C. and B. Grades.

The C Grade Quickstep was won by Ports Chalmers; the Selection (own choice) by West Harbour; the aggregate by Port Chalmers. The B Grade Quickstep was won by Oainaru Municipal; tire Selection by Otago Mounted Rifles (Oamaru); and the Aggregate for the Begg Shield by Oamaru. Municipal. 1

The Pipe Bands Quickstep was won by Gore (handicap 25); thdi Selection by Gore (handicap 25); the Aggregate fcr the John Gold Challenge Shield by Gore (handicap 25); and the Collie Memorial Cup (music only) by Gore. Awards were: —
