CHAIN. AND PRODUCE. [PER PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. A number of consignment shipments' of potatoes to Weliltigton have been arranged during the week. There appears still t.o bo a market for old potatoes in Wellington, and though there have been no sales of any size, the price has risen since the beginning of the week to the equivalent of £7/10/- on trucks. The farmer with and potatoes still to sell would find it hard to quit them, because nearly all business has been done out of store. The local demand has also been a little better, probably because the quality of the new potatoes so far offered is not as good as it might. be. Fowl wheat continues firm. Business is now being transacted at 4/8 a bushel f.o.b. for free. Orders have come in from Dunedin this week. The North Island seems to be scarce of feed grain as shipments of maize from Africa and barley from Australia have been made. ' Trade in sma’l seeds is quiet, though there is a steady demand for retail busines, mostly in small lots. The merchants are expecting a fair autumn, trade. BUTTER AND CHEESE. WELLINGTON, November 9. The: length of reef in this section is shortening ‘ rapidly. North Winze: Sunk 3 feet, total 39 feet. Reef still strong in bottom of winze and assuming a more vertical dip. North of Old Workings: Commenced driving here, to pick up any extension of lode to the north of the old workings. Nortli Level: Stone pinched in face. Stoping over timber on reef 2ft 6in. wide. Shaft: The staging will be lowered - in the course of. a day or, two. Will then be in No. 5 level chamber. Battery; 56 tons of stone sent to the. battery. COLONIAL SUGAR CO. WELLINGTON, November 9. The Colonial Sugar Refining Company announces the declaration of a dividend of 12/6 per share-for the half year ended September 30, also a special bonus of 5/- a share, making 17/6 a share. STOCK EXCHANGE HOLIDAYS. • The Christchurch Stock Exchange was closed to-day, and will be closed next Tuesday and Friday, for the carnival holidays. The Exchange will close at noon next Mondav, Wednesday, and Thursday.
