MEMEL ELECTION

LITHUANIA’S ASSURANCE.

[BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.]

LONDON, September 28.

The Associated Press Geneva correspondent states: The Lithuanian Government has given explicit assurances to the guarantor Powers—Britain, France and Italy—that the Memel election will be held in strict accordance with the terms of the Statute.

“The Times’s” Berlin correspondent says: The British, French and Italian Ambassadors have -informed Baron Von Neurath of Lithuania’s promise. They also expressed the hope that Germany would avoid everything that might increase the tension. Nevertheless they have not made the slightest impression on the Germans, who already have publicly discounted their step. It is understood that Baron Von Neurath declared that the representations to Lithuanians had been wholly inadequate, as the Lithuanians, he said, trusting to ian inability of the signatory Powers to take effective action, were merely giving glib assurances, and were not improving the treatment of German-speaking Memel residents.

QUIET POLLING DAY

(Received September 30, Noon). MEMEL, September 29.

With th© exception of an incident at Proklus, where rival bill posters exchanged shots, four being injured, the elections, are proceeding without incident, though everywhere the inadequancy of the polling arrangements, coupled with tile intricacy of the tyallot papers, is sure to prevent the poll ending before eight o’clock to-night. Unbroken queues are waiting everywhere to enter the boot Its.
