WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

MINING EXECUTIVE. [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, September 30. The fortnightly meeting of the Westland. County Council mining committee was held on Saturday evening. Present: Messrs J. A. Murdoch (chairmajn), A. Dale, W. A. Jamieson, T. Chesterman, D. J. Evans, and supervisors T. Moore and J. McQuilken. ( The following correspondence was dealt with:— \ From Unemployment Boards Wellington, acknowledging receipt off copy of report by W. A. Kayll, Martyr River. approving of grant

of youth’s subsidy to T. G. Steele to work with Gaze and Parker. From same, acknowledging letter concerning proposal to transfer two men from Taipo track to Wataroa. River track, stating that the Board could not approve of payment at a higher rate than 22/6 per week for single men on track rates. From same, approving of special subsidy rate of £2 10/- per week to McEwan, and again- pointing out it was desired to have men working in parties in backblock areas. From same, enquiring regarding application of F. G. Thomas, Christchurch, >to prospect at Goldsborough, asking for further. particulars. From same, notifying that Minister of Mines had consented to application for prospecting license by J. D. JdcQuilkin, Kanieri. From same, forwarding copy of letter sent to S. W. Strong, approving of proposed contract rates for quartz prospecting in Ross area, and approving of £35 to be spent on Totara track.

Applications for Subsidy.—From A. J. Dillon, application for subsidy to prospect in conjunction with J. J. Busher on area already applied for at Taipo. From M. J. Stevens, to work with H. J. Stevens when eligible.— Approved. From S. Straight* application for assistance to prospect at Gobdsborough.—Approved. From D. L. Heinz, application on behalf of self and C. Singer (youth, 18) to prospect back country iff Toaroha River and Mullen’s Creek.—Held over to suggest other employment. From F. Havill, application for subsidy to prospect at Kanieri Forks. —Granted for one months if registered. From Kenny and Nicholson, application to be transferred from Taipo track clearing to goldmining subsidy to prospect at Taipo. —Approved. Renewal of subsidy was granted as follows: —Clark and McMtirtrie, Stafford; J. West. South Hokitika; J. D. and R. D. Kelly, Rimu. J. J. Rawlings, Hokitika; H. Surgenor, Rimu; D. Feeney, Blue Spur; E., T., and W. Growcott, Rimu; W. Hari Hari; Lambeth and Bruce, Hokitika River; T. H. McAllister, Kapitea.; J. T. Kelly, Awatuna; J. T. V. Cooper, Kanieri Forks; L. J. Revell, Wataroa; R. A. Parker, Goldsborough; E. G. Silk, Wataroa; R. G. Walker, Kumara; T. E. Cosgrove, Koiterangi; J. H. Hiirdy, South Hokitika.

I From E. Connelly, reporting on prospecting operations. From E. E. Raine, notifying that, he was commencing work on aerodrome, and thanking committee for past assistance. From J. E. Holmes, application to work with C. Digram at Goldsborough. From V. T. Vaughan, notifying his intention to move from Duffer’s Creek to Wataroa, and asking approval of committee. From A. McEwan, thanking committee for assistance and enquiring regarding hosing. From F. J. A. Lackner, application for special assistance for J. N. Fox and himself while driving a prospecting tunnel of 200 feet. —Held over for report. Tho Burma-Malay Tin Ltd., forwarding particulars of wages drawn by a subsidised miner.

The Chairman pointed out that the subsidised miner in question, E. A. Wickes had been asked to refund the amount paid him during the month of June, when he received the sum of £2O 14/- from Burma-Malay Tin Co. The matter should be made public, he said. It had been reported to headquarters. A formal application! will again be made for the return of the subsidy. The miner in question will be blocked from further assistance till the subsidy received is refunded. Supervisors Moore and Mc<2uilkin presented reports on the various parties in their respective districts. Gold reported won by subsidised miners during the past fortnight was 21 ozs. IS dwts. 6 grains.
