Al its meeting, the Nelson Harbour Board had its attention drawn by the Anchor Shipping Company to the increasing danger of serious damage to the wharf and to vessels moored thereat, due to the heavy surge which occurs just before and alter high water, when there is a heavy sea running in the bay. Recently the Kaitoa berthed at the inside fronting C shed was knocked about to such an extent that she had to be shifted under steam to a relatively quieter berth at the north-east end of the cuter tee, but unfortunately prior to being shifted the vessel had sustained considerable damage to her belting, etc. Evidently the surge is due to the seas striking and rebounding off the mole at the southern side of the entrance, and we suggest that steps should be taken within the very near future to obviate this serious disadvantage to the shipping interests of this port. » After a discussion in committee, when a confidential report from the Harbourmaster was read, the following motion was carried:—“That Mr G. A. Lee. consulting engineer, be communicated with, authorising him to prepare a comprehensive report on the Nelson harbour.’’ In reply to an offer of Mr Stannard to remove the rock within the harbour it was resolved that Mr Stannard be informed that the Board was securing a comprehensive report on the harbour, and that his offer would be considered.
