DEFYING THE NAZIS

CATHOLIC CELEBRATIONS.

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.)

LONDON;'August 12.

“The Times's” Munich correspondent says: A courageously outspoken reply to Goebbel’s attack on Catholicism on August 4 last, has been delivered in Munich by the Bishop of Treves. Speaking at the seven hundredth anniversary celebrations of the Limburg Cathedral, he declared that her glorious Cathedrals testified to the devoted spirit of mediaeval Germany, which spirit was not sufficiently alive to-day. Catholics, he said, refused to be intimidated, Nazi uniforms and Swastika flags were conspicuously absent from the celebrations. The streets were decorated with the Limburg clerical banners. Almost the entire population had prayer books in their hands. It was a remarkable triumph for Catholicism. The Munich streets remained unusually empty, despite an appeal to citizens to join in special antt-Catho-lie. and anti-Jewish celebrations. A few demonstrators carried banners caricaturing priests as shaking hands with Moscow leaders. Storm troopers distributed leaflets at houses ordering the residents to gather hi the streets and to exhibit the flags, but few residents obeyed.

HITLER AND PEACE.

BERLIN. August 12.

Herr Hitler, in a surprise speech To members of the Nazi Old Guard at the fifteenth anniversary celebrations of the Nazi Party, at Rosenheim, declared: “I am convinced that the world will not be able to attack Germany again. We want peace, as others should desire peace. If they should disturb us, they will find us a nation of men.”
