HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, August 10. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. G. Heinz, H. L. Michel, E. Teichejmann, A. Thompson, H. T. Parry, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, J. King and E. C. Park. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co. advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of July:—sl sheep. The Town Clerk (Gisborne) wrote, asking for Information respecting the liability of Harbour Board's for borough rates on offices, The Greymouth Aero Club advised that, owing to the total loss of the D.H. Moth . aeroplane, it had been necessary for the Club to purchase a replacement machine at the cost of £5OO. This amount had to be raised by loan, and in view of the loss sustained, the Council’s financial assistance was solicited.—Consideration deferred.

Miss L. Keller, Hall Street, and Mr Patrick Purcell, Fitzherbert Street, applied for permission to install septic tanks, to be operated by rain water supply.—Granted, subject to Health Department.

Mr A. Jamieson wrote' drawing attention to the unsatisfactory condition cf the storm water drain in Gibson's Quay, between Davie Street and.Rolleston Street.—Referred to Works Committee.

Mrs L. R. Hackell, and other residents, wrote asking that the drain and roadway be cleared of gorse, and also pointing out that the drain is a menace to children playing in the street. Referred to Works’ Committee.

The Manager, Gold Band Taxis forwarded plan showing the blocking of Revell Street on Saturday night through stationary motor cars, and asking that arrangements be made so that cars will have free access to the garage.—Referred to By-Laws Committee.

The District Railway Engineer (Christchurch) forwarded particulars of survey in respect of the railway siding to prevent the flooding of the town by the Hokitika River, between Sale Street and the Railway bridge. The estimate of supplying ballast and lifting and' packing the siding will cost about £9O, and to this must be added the cost of re-grading the road between Fitzherbert Street and Gibson’s Quay, and also providing a 3ft. concrete outlet pipe under the road and siding near the live-chain peg, and also four concrete flood gates at the outlets of the borough drain. — of leter to be sent to the Harbour Board asking them to co-operate on a 50-50 basis.

ALattiors report: Stock slaughtered during month:—B6 bullocks, 31 cows, 36 calves, 296 sheep, 33 lambs, 6 pigs, 12 heifers: condemned, one bullock and' one pig. Receipts for month £77 0/6; receipts for same month last year £65/6/6.

Financial statement: Receipts £379 2/7, expenditure £761/11/-, debit balance £ 1492/5/4. Accounts passed for payment £973/6/2.

Painting ami' repairing of the Public Library to the extent of £l2 was authorised.

Mr E. L. Park was appointed a Council representative on the Westland Hospital Board, vice Rev. 11. J. Knights (resigned). A number of necessary small works requested by the Borough gardener, Mr Herring, were granted. It was decided to bring to tho notice of the Harbour Board the dangerous manner in which timber is being •Jacked on the skids on Gibson’s Qunv near the Post Office parking place. '
