Mr. P. W. a. Riddell has been appointed a member of the Prisons Board. -

Rev. W. E. Davies, the newly-ap-pointed Vicar of Hokitika, arrived last evening with Mr'S; Davies.

Miss M. L. Cunliffe, librarian, was last evening granted, two months’ sick leave,' by the Greymouth Borough Council.

Passengers by yesterday’s express from Christchurch included: —Mr. J. Wright (from Wellington), Mr. W. Carver (from Wellington), Miss M. Ryan (from Wanganui); Mr. L. Gordon. Miss C. Summers (Dunedin).

Mr. E. C. Schnackenberg, of the Public Works Department, Greymouth, is on sick leave. He is being relieved by assistant-engineer Mr. H. S. Southern, of Christchurch.

Mr. C. J. J. T.. Barton, Senior Assistant Colonial Secretary, Kenya, will be appointed Colonial Secretary for Fiji, in succession to Mr. A. W. Seymour, who is now Colonial Secretary at Trinidad. —Official Wireless.

The marriage of Catherine Elizabeth Seebeck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Seebeck, and Mr. Gilbert Kelly, was solemnised at All Saints’ Church, Hokitika, by Rev. H. S. Hamilton, in the presence of numerous friends.

The death occurred, last evening’, at her late residence, Chapel Street, of. Mrs. Emily Tew, a native of London, aged 84 years. Deceased, who had been in failing health for the past six months, had been in New Zealand about 65 years. Her husband, the late Arthur Tew-, predeceased her about 30 years ago. She is survived by one son. Charles Gardner (Melbourne), and one daughter, Mrs. C. Tilleyshort (Greymouth). The interment will be private.

Mr. E. McHugh, of the Greymouth branch of Hallenstein Bros., Ltd., who will leave to-morrow, on ...transfer to the Hokitika, branch, was, last evening, farewelled by his fellow members of the Greymouth Civic Band, and presented with a silver wristlet watch. The presentation was jnade by the vice-president, Mr. F. E. Stent, and Messrs. T. Tarrant and A. Tomkies also eulogised Mr. McHugh’s services to the Band, musically and socially. Mr. McHugh suitably replied.

Mr. G- A. Booth has been selected as Bandmaster of the New Zealand Air Force Band. He is a member of the staff of the Petone Borough Council, and holds the Kneller Hall certificate. He began his musical career at the age of eleven in the old Oamaru Garrison Band, and later was a member of the Timaru Regimental. During the war he was Band Sergeant of the Sling Military Band. On-re-turn to New Zealand, he was conductor of the Waimate Silver Band before establishing the Timaru Cadet Band. —Press Assn.
