HOCKEY

INDIANS DEFEAT AUCKLAND. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, July 13. \ The touring Indian hockey team had little difficulty in defeating Auckland by nine goals 'to three. Auckland dominated the early stages. Two of the home side’s goals were scored soon after the commencement. India rallied well, however, and by the forwards making the most of their opportunities soon established, a lead. Auckland had the better of the play territorially, but a very sound Indian defence prevented the attacks from being finished. India had to concede an exceptionally large number bf corners, but by launching well in the goalmouth, and rushing quickly they saved, repeatedly. Dhyan Chand played a brilliant game and received excellent support from his brother Rup Singh and Wells. Masud was not as prominent as usual, being well marked. Two penalty bullies were awarded against the Indian goalkeeper, Makerjee, for obstruction. E. Watts scored from the first of these.

In the second half, while defending in the goalmouth, Mukerjee was struck on the head and was groggy for the rest of the game. E. Watts sportingly made no effort in a penalty bully, which was awarded against him.

The whole Auckland team played solidly, the forward line, which included three Dominion representatives’ being particularly strong. The scorers for India were Dhyan Chand (four), Rup Singh (three), Fernandez and Wells. Goals were scored for Auckland by E. Watts (two) and C. Watts. NEW ZEALAND TEAM. AUCKLAND, July 14.
