HOCKEY
WOMEN'S TEAM FAREWELLED fPEB PttESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. July 12. A civic farewell was given the members of the New Zealand ladies' hockey team, which left by the Marama for Sydney to-day. Councillor M. F. Luckie, on behalf of the Mayor, congratulated the members of the team on their selection, and extended them good wishes for their tour of Australia, remarking that this was the first over-
seas trip to be made by a ladies’ hockey team. Mrs. Poulton, manageress of the team, expressed the hope that the team would uphold the high traditions of New Zealand teams in other fields of sport. Mrs. Gllfedder, on behalf of the New Zealand Women's Hockey Association, said that she thought the selectors had chosen the team well, and that the team would uphold New Zealand’s reputation just as the men had done. As this was the first overseas trip made by a New Zealand women’s hockey team, it was probable that the players would encounter different
types of play from that iu New Zealand and that hockey here would therefore benefit greatly. When the team left by the Marama. there was a large crowd at the wharf to bid them farewell.
