WOMEN UNDERGRADUATES
DISMISSED FROM OXFORD.
[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.]
LONDON, June 14.
Two undergraduates, Miss Edith Shaw-Cross and Lady Katherine Cairns, have been “sent, down” from Oxford University, because they allegedly communicated information to the publication “Isis.” The sensation is the sequel to a practical joke against Miss Julia Mann, the Principal of Saint Catherine’s College, when she was locked in a room. Miss Mann demanded the names of the perpetrators of the joke. These were not forthcoming, so Miss Mann banned the “Eights Week” Ball. Subsequently a paragraph was prepared for “Isis”, the proofs of which were submitted to Miss Mann, but the paragraph was not published. The paragraph referred to the joke. It apologised to the guests who were in’.'ted to the “Eights Week” Ball. Miss Shaw-Cross, who is sub-editor of “Isis,” was first “sent down” upon which Lady Katherine Cairns declared that she had supplied the information to “Isis.” These are the first women undergraduates to be “sent down.” -*
