JAPAN AND CHINA
THREAT OF ADVANCE.
[by CABLE—PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.]
SHANGHAI, May 31.
War clouds are again gathering in North China. The Japanese are accusing the Chinese authorities of fostering anti-Japanese activities. The Japanese are threatening to send forces across the Great Wall, with the ultimate object of including Pekin and Tientsin within the demilitarised zone.
A Japanese Army representative, Colonel Saki, delivered a. stern warning Note to Ho-Yiug-Chin, Chinese Minister of War, on Wednesday, in-
timating that the recent uprising of Chinese volunteers within the demilitarised zone had been instigated at Tientsin and Pekin, with th© result that the Japanese would be compelled ruthlessly to suppress such activities. The Note stated that should the Chinese find difficulty in suppressing the anti-Japanese activities, then Japan would have to carry them out by her own methods. While Colonel Saki was conferring with Ho-Ying-Chin, Japanese planes were circling over Pekin. Colonel Saki is quoted as saying: “Those craft-will probably appear over Karegan soon.”
