Playing with amazing accuracy and aggression, Cramm defeated McGrath in the quarter-final of the men’s singles of the French tennis championships. Crawford disposed of Bernard with consummate ease. Crawford was in great touch and with masterly strokemaking sped through three sets in fifty minutes. Results: — Men’s singles, quarter-finals: Crawford defeated Bernard 6/3, 6/1, 6/1. Cramm defeated McGrath 6/2, 6/4, 3/6, 6/3. Perry defeated Boussiis .6/1, 6/0, 6/4. Austin defeated Menzel 1/6, 10/8, 2/6, 6/4, 6/2. . Women’s singles, quarter-finals: Mathieu defeated Payot 7/5, 6/4. . LATER: Women’s singles,; quarter-finals: Scriven defeated Couquerque 6/0, 6/3. Sperling defeated Mademoiselle Iribarne 6/2, 6/2. Jacobs defeated Henrotin 6/4,-6/2. There was an unexpected result to Austin’s two and a-half hour battle with Menzal. On one of the few occasions in his career Austin won by superior stamina, after his opponent led two sets to one. Austin won by forcing tactics. He remained comparatively fresh, while Menzel in the fifth set was staggering about the court.

Perry eliminated Boussus, a much more experienced player than Bernard, with even greater ease than Crawford beat Bernard. Perry bustled Boussus so much that he was unable to execute even favourite shots.
