VIVERS PEARLS
SOLD FOR £2500
SYDNEY, May 23.
The famous Vivers pearls necklace which had been the subject of considerable litigation, was sold at auction yesterday for £2500. It is understood that the pearls were purchased for an oversea syndicate. The question of the original ownership of the pearls was before the Equity Court for a long period. Eventually the Court decided in 1931 that the necklace was the joint property of Dr. Vivers and Mrs. Vivers, being held in the proportions of four-fifths by the husband and one-fifth by the wife. The matter was not finally disposed of until February, 1934, when the Court ordered that the necklace should be sold at auction. The necklace consists of 57 pearls, weighing 640 grains, and is fastened by a clasp of diamonds and rubies. The bidding vesterday commenced at £lOOO and rose steadily to £2500, when it ceased, the auction occupying only a few minutes. The auctioneer was Mr. M. Lawson, who, it is stated, bought the pearls himself on a private buying commission. The name of the actual purchaser was not disclosed, but it is understood that the pearls were purchased on behalf of an over- ( sea syndicate, of which Mr, G. G. RosC| is the Sydney representative.
