DEATH FROM TETANUS

CAUSED BY TINY SPLINTER

SYDNEY, May 21.

Eleanor-Eileen Dawes, 3, of Bay-str-Bet, Botany, died, at the Prtyce Henry Hospital yesterday from tetanus, .which she evidently contracted when a'tiny splinter entered one.’, of her toes.

Tha child was being, bathed on Wednesday when she became stiff. Her mother took her out of the bath and she’ soon recovered. Shortly afterwards she was walking, home after buying some oranges and sweets Avhen her jaws locked on a lolly. A passer-by. Charles Jones,’ of Botany. noticed the girl’s distress and thought that she was choking. He attempted to’ force open her jaws and had his fingers caught between her teeth. He was unable to extriuata them until the girl’s jaws had been forced apart with a clothes, peg. A doctor found that she was suffering from tetanus, and had her removed to hospital. Everything possible was done to . save her life, but gho died yesterday morning. It was not known how she had been infected, and only a careful examination of her body led to the discovery of the tiny scratch! caused by the, tplinter. The girl’s parents are in poor cii 1 ' cuinstances. Police and neighbours started, a fund to help them, and £5 has already been collected.
