STOREKEEPER ASSAULTED. WELLINGTON, May 31. In connection "with the breaking and entering of a store at Miramar, and an assault,on the proprietor, Furness, early yesterday ' morning, Henry Horace Smith, 35, labourer, appeared before Mr Mosley, S.M., to-day, and was remanded for a week, on a charge of breaking, entering and stealing tobacco, cigarettes and about £1 in cash, the total value being £3O. DAIRY BOARD. CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. The newly-appointed New Zealand Dairy Board held its first meeting in Christchurch, to-day, for the purpose of gathering evidence, from which the chairman (Mr. Murdoch) said it was hoped to evolve a scheme of marketing which would be suitable for the whole Dominion. Representatives of factories and other Interests met the Board, the evidence being taken in camera. FOUND SHOT. CHRISTCHURCH, May 30. Charles Rountree, farmer, of 67, McFadden’s Road, -was found dead in the kitchen of his home last evening] There was a wound in his chest, and a shot-gun lay close by. Mr, Rountree, who was 55 years of age, had bean in ill-health for some time. He was found by one of his sons, but he was past assistance. An inquest, opened by Mr. E. C. Levvey, Coroner, this afternoon, was adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken. JOURNALISTS’ AWARD. WELLINGTON, May 30. A complete agreement was reached between the Wellington Newspapers’ Proprietors and the Wellington Journalists’ Union in Conciliation Council to-day in respect of wages. A 5 per cent, increase was granted in a majority of cases, the reporters’ and subeditors’ salaries being in line with the rates awarded in the recent agreement between the Auckland proprietors and journalists. The term of the new award is for one year, and it was made retrospective from April 1. HIBERNIAN SOCIETY. TIMARU, May 30. The annual .conference of the New Zealand branch of the Hibernian Society is being held here. The conference has elected the following Grand Officers: —President: Bro. T. Pound (Wellington); Vice-President: Bro. M. Grimes (Christchurch): Past-Presi-dent: Bro. P. D. Hoskins (Wellington); Treasurer: Bro. W. C. Frude (Wellington) ; Warden: Bro. J. Stratford (Wellington); Guardian: Bro. J. McLaughlin (Wellington): Auditors: Bros. A. V. Dallow and S. F. Hoskins (Wellington). , c , It was reported that the total funds excesded £106,000, and the membership 4,500. Ten new branches were opened during the year. OVERSEAS RADIO TELEPHONE. WELLINGTON, May 31. The Postmaster-General (Mr Adam Hamilton) stated to-day, that he was pleased to be able to announce that a permanent reduction of 25 per cent, in the charges for radio telephone ser-vice-between New Zealand and Australia, and between New Zealand and the United Kingdom had been agreed to between the administrations concerned. The reduction is to take effect as from to-morrow, June 1. The new charges are: Between New Zealand and Australia 15/- per minute. with a minimum of £2/5/-. Between New Zealand and the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland £1 14/- per minute with a minimum of £5/2/-. The Minister expressed the hope that these permanent reductions following immediately upon the jubilee reduction of 50 per cent in the charges for calls between New Zealand and the United Kingdom during the month of May. would result in the radio telephone service being availed of to a much greater extent than in the past, and thus bring about an even closer relationship between these already closely related portions of the Empire.
