MOTOR REGISTRATION

PERMANENT PLATES ADVOCATED

[per press association.]

■WELLINGTON, May 30.

The Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Wellington Automobile Association, Mr. A. E. Batt, said in an interview: —

“It is my personal opinion that the annual registration and issuance of new number' plates is a very costly procedure, as Avell as occupying anenormous amount of valuable time of 200,000 vehicle owners. It appears to me that the time has when the Government should seriously consider the adoption of the English procedure of issuing a permanent number plate, and indicating ithat the annual license has been paid, by a coloured sticker attached to the windscreen, the colour being changed each year, to obtain exactly the same results as we in New Zealand obtain by a more costly method of having new number plates of varying colour each year. I as sure it would be of interest for the public to know that vehicle owners in New Zealand pay £20,000 per annum ior new number plates, on which the Post and Telegraph Department will make a profit of £7,000. Mr. Batt also protested against the refusal of the Post and Telegraph Department to supply registration and third party risk forms, for use in the Association’s depots.
