W.F.A. COMPETITIONS. The competitions of the Westland Football Association were advanced a further stage during the week-end, in ideal weather conditions. In the Westland Cup, Marist had a narrow win over the improved Greymouth team by two goals to one. Greymouth juniors accounted for Marist, after a keen struggle, -while in the fourth grade, Marist and Cobden A. had victories. MARIST (2), GREYMOUTH (1). This game proved a keen struggle. Greymouth being in the lead until late in the second half, when Marist equalised and took the lead shortly before time. The teams were:— Marist: W. Timlin, Marshall, Grogan, O’Connell, McLean, Woods, Bayley, J. Timlin, Pollock, Henderson, and Martin. Greymouth; Hall, Lee, R. Hall, McNeill, Rutherford, Walton, Best, Restieaux, Vaughan, Zanes, Smythe. Marist were the first to attack, but Lee cleared. Bayley received and put in a good run to shoot narrowly by. From the by-kick, Bayley forced Hall to concede a corner. O’Connell put by. J. Timlin gained possession, and placed through to Pollock, but Restieaux cleared. Marist returned and Timlin again placed through to Pollock, but M. Hall cleared. Marist were pressing hotly, at-this stage, but Greymouth’s defence was sound. Pollock broke through, but Bayley was offside. M. Hall played well down-field, but McLean returned to Bayley to Henderson, who put by. Greymouth broke away, and Marshall kicked into Vaughan, for the ball to rebound into the goal mouth, but Timlin was safe; Gfeymouth returned and Best put in a good shot, which missed by inches. From the by-kick, Greymouth came again, and Woods had’ to concede a corner. Marshall cleared to McLean to Timlin, who placed over the bar, when in a good position. From the by-kick, Rutherford put in a good run to shoot from well out, but Timlin cleared. Play returned to mid-field, where Pollock was penalised for hands. M. Hall took the kick, and placed well down to Best, who centred into the goal-mouth. W. Timlin handed out, but Vaughan coming through fast found the net with a good shot. Greymouth 1, Marist 0. Greymouth attacked from the kickoff, but McLean cleared to Martin, who put in a good run for Hall to concede a corner. Martin again received and placed in the goal mouth, but Hall cleared. Bayley crossed to HOnderson,. who put by, when well placed. Half-time found the score, Grey 1, Marist 0. Upon the resumption, Grey broke through and Vaughan tested Timlin iyith a good shot, but he was safe. Marist came away, and O’Connell centred well for Lee to concede a corner. Henderson received to shoot, but Hall made a great save, conceding a corner. Greymouth attacked, but Grogan cleared and placed well down the field to Pollock to Henderson, but Martin’s shot was too high. Greymouth attacked and Timlin had z to concede a corner from a good shot by Rutherford. Rutherford returned to McNeil, who, with only the goalkeeper to beat, put by. Rutherford again received and passed to Vaughan, but Grogan cleared. Martin put in a good run down the wing, but he cleared. Smythe received to- cross, but Timlin cleared. Bayley received and after a clever run down the wing passed to Pollock to Henderson, who shot over an open goal. Marist attacked, but Hall cleared. Martin received and shot, but Hall was safe. Rutherford placed through to Vaughan, but Timlin cleared. M. Hall, in tackling J. Timlin, was injured, and left the field temporarily. Marshall received, and placed well up to Pollock, Lee conceding a corner. J. Timlin took the corner-kick and put in a great centre, which, striking Rutherford, rebounded into the net. Marist 1, Grey 1. This success seemed to put new life into the Marist team, who now attacked hotly, and from a centre by Marshall, Henderson headed in. Marist 2, Grey 1.
From the kick-off, Marist again attacked, but Henderson delayed his shot too long and Hall cleared. Plav returned to mid-field, where full time sounded with the score Marist 2, Greymouth 1. Mr A. Harail was referee.
WAIUTA DEFEAT RUNANGA. In a Westland Cup fixtre, at Waiuta yesterday, Waiuta seniors defeated Runanga by three goals to two. JUNIOR GRADE. GREYMOUTH 3, MARIST 1. Playing at Victoria Park on Saturday, Grey juniors defeated Marist by three goals to one. For Marist, Knapp was the scorer, while for Grey Bateman (2) and McNaughton found the net. FOURTH GRADE. Playing at Cobden, on Saturday, Marist Fourths defeated Cobden B by a single goal, scored by H. Hopkins. On the same ground, Cobden A met a depleted Tech, team and won by 9 goals to 1.
