UNDERWATER PEAK
island of Atlantis:
Has the mythical island of. Atlantis been discovered at last? ri ; Two French engineers, Monsieur Danton and Monsieur Coudert, recently returned from the Atlantic, where they were repairing a cable. Between Madeira, and Portugal they discovered a peak 180 feet under the sea level. It lies near the intersection of 35 degrees ' northern - latitude with 13 longtitude west of Greenwich approximately half-way between Cape’ St. Vincent and Madeira not far from the Union-Castle route. As the ocean bottom at this part of the Atlantic reaches a depth of 13,000 feet,, this peak is the top of a real underwater Mont Blanc. The French engineers took many soundings and. found the slopes of the peak ..very steep. A few miles from it the depth was more than 8000 feet. Monsieur Fichot, a French hydrographer, and a member of the Academy, of Science, when telling of this disco, very at a meeting of the< Academy remarked with a smile that this submarine mountain will give believers of the Atlantis theory new .food for their imagination. Monsieur Fichot said the most interesting thing would be to study the geological structure of the peak and the submarine plants, growing on it, as they might elucidate many of the problems of the; early construction of that part of the earth. / - l
