MOTHERLY LANDLADY

M.P. SAYS SHE IS EXTINCT The position of holiday resorts in relation to the proposed regulations to iprevent overcrowding was considered •recently by the Committee of the ' House of Commons which is considering the Housing (Scotland) Bill. ' Mr. Macquisten (C„ Argyll) proposed that local authorities should be alI lowed to declare any part of their area |to be a holiday resort and to exempt it from the overcrowding regulations in the Bill for a period of three months in a year. Describing his holiday experiences in Ireland when he was a youth, he said, “I have had to sleep in a tiny room with my feet out of the window, while the people o'f the farm slept in barns or lofts.” (Laughter). Mr. J. S. C. Reid (C. Stirling and Falkirk) asserted that unless the regulations were relaxed in the Summer a large proportion of the people of Glasgow would either have to sleep in tents or forgo their seaside holiday. He entered a plea on behalf of the decent, reputable landlady who made her living by letting. Mr. Kirkwood (Soc., Dumbarton Burghs) declared that the motherly type' of landlady—who had been described by Mr. Macquisten—did not exist, and that poor people were exploited by the high rents charged. “In some Scottish resorts wash-houses are let in the Summer season as bedrooms,” he said. The Committee had not disposed of the main amendment when it adjourned.
