The idea has been widespread in the United States, for long past that a man at. forty is too old to give efficient service. Professor Thorndyke, of Columbia University, recently conducted a series of experiments that, entirely disproved the idea that men over 40 years of age are incapable of learning anything new. He took 465 teachers, grouped them in ages from 20 to 29 years of age, 30 to 39, 40 to 49. In tho severe examinations set. the first two groups came out level, hut tho older group were easily the best. In l a test dealing with the learning of languages all tho groups came out level, in spite of the generally accepted theory that, childhood is tin l best, time to learn a language. In fad. the professor showed by experiment that men of 57 easily beat boys of 15 in the study of a language. Professor Thorndyke reached the conclusion that tho best time to learn a thing is just before you need to use it, for it is using it that makes it an organic! part of one’s education. |
