CELEBRATIONS AT LUSAKA. The capital of Northern Rhodesia since the middle of the nineteenth century, when the great missionary Dr. Livingstone traversed the plains and mingled with the uncivilised tribes of that country, has been the town, of Livingstone, named after the Lusaka is .‘now to be designated the capital. This change will be inaugurated by a week of celebrations culminating with the official celebration of the King’s birthday on June 3, when there will be a military parade and a garden party. Lusaka has been adopted on account of its geographical advantages over the. present capital, and during the past year Government House and the administrative offices have been in the course of construction, Tney will be complete in a sew weeks, but the selection of the date for the inauguration has been largely influenced by tho desire to. make the inauguration of the capital coincide with the King’s Jubilee. The celebrations will begin on May 27, when Lady Young, wife of the Governor,- will formally open the new aerodrome at Lusaka, in the nresence of many, distinguished visitors, who will include Mr Pirow, Minister for Defence in the Union Government of South Africa, and ViceAdmiral Sir Edward R. G. R. Evans. Commanding the Naval Station at | Simonstown.
Government House will be inaugurated on May 29, when there will be an official luncheon and a ball. Other items in the programme are the opening of the administrative offices and of a hospital for Europeans. The lightei<side of the festivities will include a gymkhana, an air and motor carnival and football and hockey matches.
