MEETINGS
BRUNNER BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Brunner Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers. Wallsend, last evening, to certify the supplementary roll of electors. Present: The Mayor, Councillors Fordham, Devlin. Barber, and Gutberlet.
After the special meeting the ordinary general meeting was held. The Public Works Department advised that the repairs to the groyne in the Stillwater Creek may be charged to Highway Maintenance Authority.
The annual balance sheet was adopted as satisfactory for publication.
Accounts amounting to £B4/3/4 were passed for payment. The overseer was instructed to make moulds for pipes for a culvert in Taylorville. The Mayor thanked the Councillors for their co-operation during the term which is expiring. He also thanked the Town Clerk and all the Borough employees for their work in the past. He apologised for the absence of Councillors A. McLagan and T. Harper. Mr Smeaton expressed the regret that Councillor Devlin was not seeking re-election. HOKITIKA HARBOUR BOARD. [OUT? OVr’N CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, April 27. A special meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held last evening to receive and adopt the annual balance sheet. Members present were: Messrs E. W. Heenan (chairman), J. j Cuttance, D. P. Stuart, M. H. Houston, |W. E. Richards. An apology was received for the absence of Mr N. Warren. The Chairman pointed out the bal-ance-sheet bore no tags, and the principal item was an amount of over £2OO, which had been transferred to loan account to make up for uncollected rates. The balance-sheet was adopted and ordered to be published. The ordinary meeting of the Board followed. A request was received from the Kanieri Electric Ltd. for permission to carry a high-powered line along the river bank to Hokitika. —Granted. The Secretary of the Marine Department wrote, stating that representations have been made to the Department that the ship Orewa is obstructing navigation in the channel to the wharf. If the owner fails to comply with the Board’s request, the Board has authority under the General'Harbour Regulations to move the vessel at the expense of the owner. Apart from being an obstruction to navigation, the vessel moored as at present is likely to effect shoaling. The matter was considered at length by the members, who are of the opinion the owner is defying the wishes of the Board.—lt was resolved that Mr Wood be notified that there is safe anchorage for his boat in Mahinapua ! Creek, and if this is not acceptable to contribute towards the cost of a berthage highdt up the river. The Hokitika Borough Council wrote requesting a conference with the Board members on the question of protecting the town from flooding by the river overflowing.—lt was resolved to meet the Council, as it is considered necessary something should be done as the river is shoaling. The date fixed for the conference is May 17.. The Marine Department wrote concerning the pollution of harbours by oil. The Chairman reported that at a meeting of representatives of local bodies to formulate plans for celebrating the King’s Jubilee he had promised assistance from the Board towards entertaining the children.— The action of the Chairman was approved. The matter of further repairs to the wharf was discussed, and it was resolved to proceed with the work at once. The signalman reported a good channel, with a depth of from 10 to 12 feet. Before the mating was closed the Chairman referred to the fact that that would be the last meeting of the Board before the elections, and he took the opportunity of thanking members for their co-operation during the past term. The work accom- < plished along the waterfront was evi- < dence of their efforts. Better facilities ; were afforded shippers and the port was in a better state than for many ; years. " .
Reference was made by the members to the fact that Mr D. P. Stuart was not again seeking election to the Board.—lt was resolved that a vote of appreciation be recorded in the minutes to Mr Stuart’s work on the Board. His practical knowledge had been of great help to the Board, and his absence from the Board will be a loss to the ratepayers. Mr Stuart expressed his thanks for the words of appreciation and his pleasant surprise at the amount of work that has been done to improve the wharf during his absence at Bruce Bay.
The death of Mr Adam Cowan, signalman at Okuru, was referred to by the Chairman, and it was resolved to forward a message of sympathy to Mrs Cowan and family.
