MR. STERLING’S TOUR
FAREWELL FROM OFFICERS. [PEK PKESB ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. April 26. Executive officers of the Railways Department entertained Mr Sterling at dinner on Wednesday, to say- au revoir on his departure on a world tour. Mr Mackley, General Manager, who presided, said that probably never before had there been, and might never again be, more necessary than at present for the head of a great industrial and transport concern, such as in the New Zealand Government Railways, to go abroad and ascertain for himself on the spot what the world was doing, and what the men guiding the nation and the world were thinking. All felt proud of the conspicuous and successful part Mr Sterling had played in the transport industry of the Dominion. Mr Sterling was presented with' a travelling rug as a token of esteem from the Executive' officers of the Department.! Mr Sterling, in reply, mentioned a number of problems in connection j
with transport which had to be faced. He said that when he notified the Government of his intention to, make the tour, he had been asked to make certain inquiries on the Government's behalf, regarding general transport problem in other countries. 1 and also regarding the development of tourist traffic. 'Fhese matters would have his attention, but he expected to be fully occupied with immediate' railway problems of other countries, insofar as they might apply to the present situation of the railways industry in New Zealand. Opportunity was also taken to farewell Mr j. Sawcrs, Information Officer, who accompanies Mr Sterling. i
