FIRST DAY’S RESULTS

HANNAN MEM’L TO SISTERINA

For the opening day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting, the weather is fine and the attendance satisfactory. The track is in good order, providing fast going. Results: —

NOVICE STAKES, of 60 sovs., five and a-half furlongs: —

Shand; 1 Nardoo. 8.5, J. Murfitt (coupled with Latitude). Won by one and a-half lengths; a length between second and third. Time 1.10 1-5. Tote £294. Marmoration was withdrawn. Latitude, on the rails, was out first to a good start, but when the field had gone half a furlong, he gave place to Arrowwin, Sundancer, and Coalpit. Sundancer ran to the front along the back, but first into the straight was Arrowwin, with Sundancer and Coalpit next. Latitude secured a run on the rails, and finished best, to win easily from Coalpit, with Copenna, who finished fast, in third place. Then came Sundancer, Arrowin, and Nardoo.

MAWHERA HANDICAP TROT (Harness), of £7O. 2.27 class. One mile:—

Won by 4 lengths; half a length. Times: 2.22 4-5, 2.24, 2.24 1-5.

The field went away to a good start, Beverley King taking up the lead from Solario, Lough Erne, Decoy Bird and Glitter. Sissisox fell about two furlongs from the start, and in trying to avoid the fallen horse, Atarau King bumped into another, horse, unseating his driver. There was no change in the order when the straight was reached, Beverley King and Solario being well clear of the others, and in the run home, the former had too much pace for Solario, who finished half a length in front of Glitter; Lough Erne was fourth, followed by the driverless horse, Atarau King, with War Sheila and Decoy Bird next. Tote £396 10/-.

Also started: 2 Bella Rosa 9.8 (L. J. Ellis), 3 Free Rose 8.4 (V. Lee), 5 Solvear 7.12 car. 7.7 (E. J. Pinn). Won by a neck each way. Time 1.21 4-5. Gold Arrow was withdrawn. Solvear drew the rails, but was chopped out at the barrier rise and lost several lengths.• Free Rose took up the running immediately from Royal Sceptre, Bella Rosa and Animated. Going down the back Free Rose was still in front, blit Animated had run up into second place, followed by Royal Sceptre and Solvear, who had made up a lot of ground. Free Rose and Animated raced into the straight together, with the remainder of the field close up, and in an exciting finish Royal Sceptre hard ridden, got up to beat Animated by a neck. Night Recital cut Fiee Rose out of third place, and then came Bella Rosa and Solvear. Tote £43SJ.

Also started: 4 Heatherglow 8.8 (C. McCarthy), 3 Cooinassie 8.2 (G. Humphries), 2 Courtyard 7.11 car. /.6 (W. H. Hibberd). Won by a length; half a length. Time 2.10. Quietlv was first away from Royal Gallant,'but. Heather Glow soon went to the front, and when half a mile had been covered, Heatherglow led from Sisterina, Coomasaie and Quietly. Heather Glow dropped out going down the back and Sisterina hit the front, leading a bunched field. Sisterina was first into the straight and was immediately challenged by Quietlv. These two had a hard tussle up the straight, and Quietly momentarily hegded Sisterina, but the latter, vigorously ridden by Pinn, came again, and won convincingly. Quietly was half a length clear of Royal Gallant, with Coomassie fourth and Heatherglow last. Tote £557.

After some delay at the barrier, the field, with the exception of Earthquake got away in line. After going two fuilongs. Golden Dart was in front from Rose Vai, Quebec aud Doiran. Appeal improved his position going down the back, but otherwise the order remained unchanged. At the far turn, Earthquake put in her claim, but Gold Dart was first into the straight closely followed by Rose Vat Doiran, Quebec, and Zetes. Rose Vai headed Golden Dart at the distance, and Earthquake came fast on the outer to beat all but Rose Vai, with Quebec close up third, and then Golden Dart, Gold Arrow, and Doiran. Bella Rosa, Pharaoh, and Latitude were withdrawn.

KAIATA HANDICAP TROT, of £7O, 3.5 class, one mile and a-quarter:

(Recd. April 26, 2 p.m.) LONDON, April 25. Two famous sires, Blandford and Foxlaw, are dead. Blandford sired the Derby winners, Windsor Lad. Blenheim and Trigo. Blandford's stock won £75,707 in flat racing in 1934, beating Stockwell’s record by £1,866. Blandford cost Mrs R. Dawson only 730 guineas in 1920. He was a failure on the racecourse, yet his offspring won 201 races valued at £202,000.
