Galloping £ MEETINGS TO COME r • April 20—Tuapeka. 1 April 20, 22—Wairarapa. i April 20, 22—Feilding. - April 20, 22—Auckland. ® April 20, 22, 23—Riverton. April 22 —Kumara. April 22—Beaumont. : April 22—Waipukurau. ; April 22, 23—Canterbury. April 24, 27 — Greymouth. ■ April 27— Marton. April 27, 29—Avondale. I KUMARA ON MONDAY. PROSPECTS OF THE HORSES. The Kumara Racing Club will hold its annual meeting on Monday. A , small field has accepted for the principal race, but the other events are satisfactory. The Club should enjoy ■a good meeting. The programme, and the prospects of horses are here given:—

' bn th© performances of Marmoration last Christmas, she should, if well, bo capable of racing prominently here. She is a slow beginner and over the distance that will be against her. The field is not strong however, Impossible being the only one that has shown galloping ability. Marmoration has her chance and the public may favour — MARMORATION, IMPOSSIBLE.

port, and is a good sort. Her impost may stop her, for much bet ter performed horses are lighter weighted. ' Heatherglow does not start smartly, and Bettwyscoed has been indisposed. Free Rose raced well at Westport, and Pharaoh has been getting through good track work. Haulbowline was not prominent at Westport, but his form should carry him through over this distance. It is an evenly-balanced field, and the best may be — , HAULBOWLINE, FREE ROSE. 1.40: ’ KUMARA GOLDFIELDS HANDICAP,

Coomassie 8 0 Sisterina 7 7 The Kumara Goldfields Handicap has attracted a small field, but the quality is there for a good race. Quietly and Monipere are well matched, and as neither is a horse' to go a distance, the chances of Sisterina appeal. Quietly has won over the distance but she is not a stayer, and Monipere is best over a mile. When the judge hoists his numbers they may be—

SISTERINA, MONIPERE. 2.20: BOROUGH TROT HANDICAP, 2.27 class, 1 mile (saddle). Cling Clang .. ser War Sheila .. scr Decoy Bird .. Scr Atarau King .. 24 Glitter .. .. scr Salute .. 24 Native Home .. scr Dawn Sonoma 3(1 Treasure Bond sdr The saddle races at Kumara have produced many surprises and Monday’s event will be no exception. They are a poor lot engaged, and the best form is held by— WAR SHEILA, ATARAU KING.

Soltaire 11. .. 7 9 Convivial 1 0 Most of the horses in this field have earlier engagements, and their running in previous races may throw a light on their prospects here. Two that are worth a thought are— ARROWROSE, BELLA ROSA.

Royal Gallant has his chance to make good here. This is one of the weakest fields he has met, the weights. Free Rose is the pick of the handicap, and if started, she must be difficult to beat. The public may favour — ROYAL GALLANT, FREE ROSE. 4.20: MINERS’ TROT HANDICAP, 3.5 class, 11 miles (saddle). Clinjj Clang .. scr War Sheila .. scr Decoy Bird .. scr Atarau King .. 06 Glitter .. scr Salute •• 36 Treasure Bond .. scr Superb ... 60 Another saddle race will add interest to the meeting and on what has been seen of those engaged the best may be — ATARAU KING, SALUTE. 5.0:

together for the High weight Handicap and this should produce the best Taco of the day. It may be profitable to remember — PHAROAH, COLOSSIAN. THIS MORNING’S WORK. There was a big contingent of horses at work at Omoto this morning. and the track being in good order, candidates for Kumara had an excellent chance for a final work-out. Arrowrose and Royal Sceptre worked early. Royal Sceptre leaves to-night, with Earthquake, to participate in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Both put plenty of effort into their work, and although Royal Sceptre will be meeting a strong field he is well enough to run prominently. Arrowrose galloped five furlongs in 1.5, and she is very well. Sundancer did two rounds at half-pace. She is

. handicapped with a cold, and may not be at her best for a few days. Pharoah, Rhea, and Monipere ran five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Pharaoh finisthed in front. Quietly ran six furlongs in 1.20, but was not hitting out, and had to be shaken up over the final furlong. Rothen covered half a mile in 56 seconds, and Quebec , did three furlongs in 38 3-5. Bella Rosa did easy work on the sand, and Arrowmid galloped five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. She is well. Haulbowline, putting plenty of effort into his work, went over seven furlongs in 1.30. Sibella and Coalpit galloped three furlongs in 38 2-5, the latter going well. Arrowmid and Karakatoa covered half a mile in 51 2-5. Wino did easy work over a couple I of rounds. L Royal Sceptre, on the outside, beat . Earthquake home, over six furlongs, ■ in 1.19. , Solvear, Potent and Rich Harvest [ covered four furlongs in 52 3-5, Sol- ; vear finishing in front, two lengths clear of Potent. Royal Gallant did a good working gallop over six furlongs in 1,18 3-5. Arena and Linoleum worked on the sand. Margaret Rose and Haujbowline were worked, both having been knocked about on transit to Westport. Haulbowline has recovered, and hit out well in his efforts this morning. ~ RACES AT RICCARTON. PROSPECTS FOR MONDAY. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will open at Riccarton on Monday. Well-filled fields will parade in each event, and with, many high-class gallopers engaged, especially in the principal events, the racing should provide some excellent contests. The win and place system of speculation will again be in use. The programme is as follows: — KILDARE BRUSH HURDLES, two miles.

Palmary .. 9 9 Radiant Rose 9 0 The opening event will not have the big field expected from the nominations, but the material remaining is good, and there .should be a close fight for supremacy. Some are new to brush hurdling, but are otherwise proved fencers, and the strange obstacles may not trouble them. Recent form points to the prospects of PALMARY FLEETING GLANCE JOLLY BEGGAR CHAMPAGNE STAKES, six furlongs. Bun Fight Greek Shepherd Hororata Heritage Silver Sail Kinnoull Helolse Some smart two-year-olds will dispute matters in the Champagne. Stakes, including five winners. Bun Fight and Hororata will be bracketed, and both are certain starters. Interest wil| attach to the appearance of the Wood-ville-trained Heritage, who, carrying the same colours as his close relative Commendation, the winner in 1926, has proved himself one of the best of the North Island juveniles. Kinnoull will be a worthy South Canterbury representative, while Silver Sail and Greek Shepherd can be depended upon to help towards a most interesting race. No doubt, most support will be forthcoming for HERITAGE KINNOULL CHOKEBORE BRACKET

Handicap will, no doubt, be confined to three o£ the eight acceptors. Golden King impressed bv winning over a mile and a quarter at Wingatui in February, and is evidently partial to some ground. Chidden is in at a handy weight, and her work since she won at Motukarara early last month has been very encouraging. Sky Rover ran a fair third over a mile and 35 yards to Dodge and Colossian at Washdyke this month, and galloped exceptionally well over a mile yesterday. Dispute for favouritism should rest between CHIDDEN GOLDEN KING SKY ROVER

Concert Pitch 7 7 The Russley Plate will provide another field of two-year-olds, headed by Silver Coat, winner of the McLean Stakes, and who would not have been in this race but for his nomination for any further classic events outside Wingatui being overlooked. He is a solid youngster, and will be in at the finish. Viking also has shown his galloping ability, and his meeting with Silver Coat will be one of the features of the day. Taillight drew attention by his second placing to Viking over five furlongs at Washdyke, doing his best work at the right end. Of the remainder, Grey Honour, Silver Fox and Col’een Ougue appear to have the best credentials. The final summing up will probablv favour SILVER COAT VIKING TAILLIGHT

i~iT.v Orest .. d The field for the Great Easter Handicap may not be the best paraded for this long established and popular event, but it is certainly well-balanced, and there is an evenness of form represented that must ensure a close tussle over the business stages of the seven furlong journey. The form of tire majority of the candidates has been exposed to the public more or Ises during the past month, and investors have had every opportunity to sum up the prospects of the likely starters. There is every possibility of a large and well distributed pool,

and the favourite division may be confined to TIZZY REREPAI PRINCESS DOREEN

Zionist ..88 There is no outstanding candidate '■ in the Courtenay Handicap, and once J again speculation is likely to take a . wide range. Delium, Song Boy, Joy--1 ous, Polygraph and Dover Patrol have ‘ all shown some form, while Land Raid, Tooley Street and Princess Rawene 1 have also shaped promisingly on the ' track. The best supported will probably bo JOYOUS POLYGRAPH SONG BOY

The Sockburn Handicap will be in the nature of a dress rehearsal for the Great Autumn Handicap, practically all of the candidates appearing in the card for Tuesday’s big race. Again the field is fairly evenly balanced, and over half of the number will command serious attention. A trio likely to fight out the finish comprise HUNTING GO MIGHT POLYDORA

difficult problems of the day to solve in the Papanui Handicap, in fact the issue appears exceptionally open. Manetho, Moonbeam, Red Dance, Colombo, Owlsgleam-Silly Owl bracket and Lady Zephyr have al Ito be regarded, and the best of these on the day may be MANETHO RED DANCE MOONBEAM WAIPUKURAU FIELDS. PROSPECTS FOR MONDAY. The Waipukurau Racing Club will race on Monday. Fields are not large, and the single pool system of betting will operate. The following horses may be prominent: Maiden Race: Peggy’s Joy, Snowball. * Hatauma Hack: Contact, Lady Ina. Ruataniwha Hack: Lady Wessex, Memnon. Waipukurau Cup: Sunny Sky, Gainsfid. Oringi Handicap: Blue Garter. Passion Flower. Ladies’ Handicap: Air Laddie, Dozia.

The acceptances are as follow: — Maiden Race, ti furlongs:—Milburn, Vainsborough, Unexpected, Peggy’s Joy, Aubretia, Lady Ceval, War Parade, Snowball, Royal Mimic, Celerimus. Hatuma Hack, 5 furlongs:—Dick Whittington 9.0, Contact 8.9, Silver Song 8.7, Vonia Park 8.0, Lady Ina, Greenore 7.11, Quaint 7.8, Good Cheer 7.5. Purimu Handicap, 6 furlongs: — Maine 9.0, Contact 8.10, Father’s Choice, Silver Song 8.6, Flamingo 8.5, Vonia Park 8.0, Quaint 7.9, Wine Tray, Good Cheer 7.5. Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs:—Souchong 9.0, Good Hunting 8.11, Sunny Sky 8.5, Cullus 7.13, Tahoma 7.7, Dick Whittington, Hatuma 7.5. SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, April 18. A dense fog seriously interfered with early morning training operations at Riccarton yesterday, and only a few gallops were executed before the breakfast interval, and they were almost impossible to time. The fog lifted in time for the after-breakfast work, and some interesting and instructive gallops were staged on the outside of the course proper, which provided excellent going with the sting just out of the ground. Horses Obscured:

Fracas and Knock Out were the only early workers it "was possible to time, as they went away from the mile post, and watch-holders were able to see them move off, and then hurry across the centre tracks to see them emerge from the fog at the winning post. This pair ran their journey in 1.43, Knock Out again giving an impressive display.

The same procedure was necessary with Grand Review and Lucetta, who separately ran seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5 and 1.34 respectively, while Minerva! registered 1.45, without it being possible to take any sectional times. Variant and Hostis were not in evidence, as they were given a smart gallop over seven furlongs on the course proper early on Wednesday morning.

Easter Handicap Candidates: Conditions had much improved when Sam Smith, Tuiran and Rebel Chief paraded for a six furlong task. The trio were together at the half-mile, but then Sam Smith took charge and, gradually drawing away, beat Tuiran by three lengths, with Rebel Chief five lengths back. The time, 1.15 4-5, in the circumstances, was good, the last half-mile being run in 50 3-5. Sam Smith will be ridden by A. Russell in thb Great Easter Handicap, and has to be considered a possibility. Tuiran is invariably a disappointing track worker, but Rebel Chief shaped badly, and is undoubtedly not himself.

Worth Watching: Sky Rover, picked up by Patrole at the six furlong post, finished a length in fitont of his mate at the end of a mile in 1.43 2-5, the second half in 52 2-5. The former can be expected to race prominently next week.

Visitor Impresses: Tauramai and Importance finished practically abreast after covering seven furlongs in 1.30, the last four in 51 4-5, but it W'as evident that the former was under restraint to keep back to his companion over the final stages. Useful Tasks: Moonbeam and Frenchie strode over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5, the last four in 52, and Emissary was let off with a strong gallop over five furlongs, taking 1.9. Fleeting Glance was given work over a mile and a quarter, tire last, mile in 1.40 3-5. Doctor Duthie reeled off half a mile along the back in 50 4-5, and his stable mate Capital covered the same ground in 50 2-5 from a standing start. Chidden maintained an even pars throughout a mile gallop in 1.45 3-5, the last half in 53 3-5. Sea Fox ran six furlongs on the plough in 1.18 2-5, the last half in 51. Cranford, picked up by Dover Patrol at five furlongs, traverseci .seven furlongs in 1.29, the last four in 51 3-5. He did Ms work well, and may yet be

dangerous in the Great Easter Handicap.

Gay Crest and Master Tony ran half a mile smartly in 49. Polydora had to be held back to Silver Sight in completing a mile journev in 1.43 3-5, the last half in 52 1-5. Polydora finished on very strongly and could have recorded much belter figures if pressed. ■ Fiord. Pink Abbey and Cape Gabo covered half a mile together in 50. 1 Tout de Monde, receiving over two stone from Imperial Spear and Courtyard, was always going the best over a mile, and he finished under a pull in front in 1.43 3-5, the second half in 51 4-5, A surprise may be in store from the first named next week. Manetho comfortably reeled off half a mile along the back in 49 3-5, the last three in 37. Glowlight, joined by Lady Zephyr at seven furlongs, covered a mile in 1.46 3-5, the second half taking 55 1-5. The latter was going very freely at the post. Concert Pitch and Culotte, two maidens in T. H. Gillett’s stable, ran half a mile in 49 4-5, and Greek Shepherd and Knowledge were rastricted to strong work over six furlongs.

Gold Label easily acounted for Convivial over six furlongs in 1.17 1-5, tlie last four in 50 3-5. Malvasia beat Polygraph over five furlongs in 1.2 1-5. Jolly Beggar broke away in front of Star Raider commencing a six furlong gallop, but was steadied, and the pair finished together in 1.18 1-5, the last four in 50 2-5. Horowhenua comfortably beat Ha ore. Tonu over seven furlongs in 1.30 1-5, the last four in 51 2-5. Golden Dart and Rebel Queen ran five furlongs in 1.4, and Lowater occupied 1.17 for six furlongs. Matron and Universe, two-year-olds in D. O'Connor's stable, sprinted half a mile in 50 4-5, finishing together. Joyous heat Westward Ho by four lengths after covering five furlongs in 1.3 2-5, the last half-mile in 51. Grey Honour and Red Heckle’s two-year-old brother recorded 49 3-5 for half a mile. A name has not yet been decided for the latter youngster.
