HOKITIKA NOTES
[our own correspondent.]
HOKITIKA, April 1. 1 About 120 of those who came by the excursion on Sunday, visited Lake , Kanieri. Fine weather prevailed. The; train left again at 4 p.m. Mr. J. Cooper, who has acted as chief supervisor under the mining subsidy scheme controlled by I? the ! Westland County Council, resigned from the position on Saturday evening. The chairman and members of the committee expressed regret over Mr. ■ Cooper’s resignation and eulogised his work since the inception of the scheme. Mr. Cooper’s knowledge of mining and of the district and his fairness to the subsidised men and the committee won him the esteem of all. Mr. Cooper thanked the chairman and committee for their remarks and offered to give assistance when he could. The amount of gold won by subsidised miners in the Westland district during the past fortnight was 30 ozs. 12 dwt. 21 grs. This brought up the total since the inception of the scheme to 1,011 ozs. 12 dwt. This does not include the maximum amount being won by men who are now off the ' scheme, but who were assisted till they did not require it.
