To-day’s Racing News

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME March 30 —Hawke’s Bay. March 30 —Birchwood. April 4—Waimate. April 6, B—Dargaville. April 6 —South Canterbury. April 9,. 10 —Pahiatua. April 11, 13 —Whangarel. April. 13—Taranaki. April 13—Otautau. April 13, 15 —Westport.

Brought Back: Inflation will not be the only resurrected hope at Easter. The Quorn, Gay Crest, and Rebel Star are amongst those that have been nominated.

Lalla Quex Betired: Lalla Quex has been retired to the stud. By Lord Quex from Lalla Rookh, by Feramorz from Class, by Wallace from La Tosca, she comes from a stout staying line.

Link Divine: Mr W. Kirkland’s 2-year-old Link Divine will not be' raced again this season. Mr F. S. Easton’s filly Fairfax, in the same stable, will race at New Plymouth on April 13 as a preliminary to the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. .

Heather Glow:/ Heather Glow bore an improved appearance when produced at Pamaru, but did not race up to expectations. Back to Form:

Acceptable, which won a double at Awapuni, is by Tea Tray from Bonny Dawn, by Greenback, the sire of Paper Money, and as he is only four years old the best has apparently not yet been seen of him. He should do well during the autumn.

In a Bad Way: Limex has been giving her connections a lot of anxiety through having developed acute kidney trouble.' She contested the Tauranga Cup, but subsequently she was in a bad way. A veterinary surgeon has taken charge of her, and it seems that it will be some months before any permanent cure may be effected. Should Not Be Long:

Kemal Pasha was very consistent In his two races at Trentham, following up his third to Rerepai arid Emissary on the previous Saturday by beating all but Emissary on Monday. With Rerepai off the scene on the second day, the form thus worked out very well. Kemal Pasha is in great order and he should be an early winner. .

Fast Acre: .Fast Acre has changed owners, and is now in the stable of E. J. Murtagh at Te Awamutu. Fast Acre has a torrent of pace, but is lacking in stamina. He should run on better with age, and Murtagh is likely to get good money with him. Entre Nous Colt:

One of the finest youngsters at the Elderslic- Stud is proclaimed by vis. itors to be the half.brother, by Iliad to Guarantee. He is said to have more size, scope and liberty of action than Guarantee, and Mr. J. M. Samson, his owner and breeder, should have something good if all goes well.

Building Up Fersen: Though ho is being given light exercise on the track, Fersen will not race again before July. He has built up since being eased up in his work after the Te Aroha meeting and promises to be a bigger and more solid horse next season.' His Best Distance:

Trainer Fred Davis admits that a great mistake has been made in trying to race Red Manfred over distances past ten furlongs in spite of the fact that he won the Great Northern Derby and St. Leger last season. The Australian-bred four-year-old is definitely a non-stayer, but he is a great mile and a-quarter proposition and a good weight-carrier.

Sans Peine: . The imported horse Sans Peine, who has been purchased for the Elderslio Stud, divides the honour of being top-weight with Hall Mark for the Sydney Cup. If possibilities at the stud are on a par with racing merit, Sans Peine will be a great asset to the Elderslie Stud.

Dropping in Weight: Some slight recognition of Polydora’s depreciation in form has been made in the weights for the Timaru Cup. She meets Guarantee, who finished second to Sam Smith at Oamaru, on 21b better terms. The change in poundage will not bring them together, but a change in mood would make all the difference in the world.

Mangu King’s Double: Mangu King registered two smooth performances by annexing both hurdle events at Tauranga. The black gelding looked particularly well and apparently is better than ever. The class of hurdlers at the meeting was not strong, and there were no potential Great Northern candidates. Mangu King, however, looks sure to win again in the winter when the company is not strong.

A Good Hack: Jubilee Song has not done a great deal of racing, but he has won four races this season and his winning turn is far from ended. So far he has not been tried over distances of further than a mile, but there is every indication that he will run out a good ten furlongs and ho should not be hard to place In one of the minor cups during the holiday meetings.

Jockey’s Profitable Win: The Sydney jockey, J. B. Pratt, received a present of £5OO for his win on Sylvandale in the Australian Cup. The boys who looked after Sylvandale were not forgotten, nor was the farrier, who shod him. The proud owner distributed bank notes among them. After bestowing these favours, the owner, "Miss Lorna Doone," the wife of a Sydney doctor, fed Sylvandale with loaf sugar, of which the colt is very fond. Useful King Lu Stock: Keith Lu was one of the best hacks seen out at the Bay of Plenty meeting and scored two successes in the hack sprints. In both events the King Lu gelding finished with a rare burst of speed and determination, and he looks likely to attain further honours. Keith Lu impressed as one likely to be seen in good advantage over longer distances in the future. In the Stewards’ Handicap all the place-

getters were by King Lu, the winner being Keith Lu, with King Brierly second and Queen Nona third.

“The Last o£ the Breed’’: Two youngsters, both geldings, are in work at Greenmeadows under R. Alexander for their owners, Messrs G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb. One is a full-brother to Gold Pit (CockpitGold Bound), and he has been named Mutunga, meaning “the last of the breed.” Mutunga is the admiration of all who have seen him, and in addition to being well-proportioned, is particularly even tempered. The other is a full-brother to Copenna, arid a half-brother to Grecian, being by Cockpit from Ennea.

Work at Omoto: The track at Omoto racecourse is in excellent order, and has never been better for training work, both on the grass and the sand. There was not a great amount of fast work this morning, but several horses were put through useful tasks. Earthquake and Arrowrose worked before breakfast, covering a mile and a-half, at three-quarter pace. Arrowrose has built up into a solid mare, and is looking better now than ever, while Earthquake is also working in generous mod. E. Kingan’s horses all Jook well, and with'the exception of Copyist, which met with a slight accident a few days ago, are in forward condition for Easter racing. Copyist will resume work within a few days. Free Rose and Arrowmid ran five furlongs in 1.6, Free Rose finishing in front. Arrowmid was never a smart track worker, and not much notice need be taken of her efforts. She looks in great order. Arrowmid and Sibella were worked on the sand, both being eager to stretch out. Arrowmid should be in the right order for the Westport meeting. is not engaged there. Knocklong is running in the paddock, and will not race during the Easter circuit. She will be taken up soon, for a preparation to fit her for the Dunedin June meeting. Sisterina and Nautipol covered 5J furlongs in 1.14, finishing on terms. Riri, which is bearing a muchimproved appearance on Christmas showing, worked a mile and a-half, and did it well. Lady Rene also did a circuit, and is in forward condition for Easter racing, Haulbqwline and Pharoah ran five and a-half furlongs in Pharoah finishing lengths in front. Pharoah is looking exceptionally well, but a

noted track-worker, he seldom erproduces his speed in a race. Rothen is now held on lease by G. McKendry. He is working well, but has no engagement at Westport. Monipere ran half-a-mile in 52, and Royal Sceptre went twice round, coming home the last two furlongs in 25 secs. Margaret Rose, on the outside, ran a smart half-mile in 50 1-5, alone. Sundancer did two circuits and came home the final two furlongs in 25 3-5. Sundancer looks well, and should win her first race during the. Easter carnival. j
