A dog of exceptional mental capacity was run over in Whangarei last week by a, motor-car. The animal was an Airedale, owned by Mr. H. L. Haden and had been trained to perform many useful tricks. In addition to bringing in the newspaper, removing hoots and bringing slippers, the dog had b-' i e:: taught to hold a hose while the garden was being watered. On one occasion
possibly tiring of this task, the dog turned tho hose on his master as a gentle hint.
“Few realise just, how much I’m moral tone of the people of Now Zealand has been lowered by the action of the Government in repudiating contracts,” said Mr. F. G. Opie. at a recent. meeting of the Palmerston North. Chamber of Commerce. “Contracts to-day are made only to be broken, and I believe that a great deal of recent crime in relation to money is due to this fact." Mr. A. .1. Graham said they were indeed getting a long way j from British tradition.
