HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, February 27. A special meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening to meet Mr. Campbell, engineer, of Christchurch, who has come over to report on an improved water-supply scheme for the borough. In the course of a general talk, it was pointed out that the present system was put down' in 1909; that the reservoir holds 280,000 gallons of water; that it is 250 feet above the town; and that the lake is 436 feet above the town. It was stated there were too many dips in the pipe-line from the lake, one at Boucher’s Mill being 40 feet. It was desirous of constructing a line with a more even grade, so that more water may be delivered at the reservoir. A tentative line has already been marked out by the overseer. The weakness of the wooden pipes was the iron binding which rusted. Mr. Campbell said that before he could advise, he must make an examination of • the proposed line. Those present at the meeting were the Mayor .(Mr. Perry), Crs. G. Heinz, E. Teichelmann, J. King. A. R. Elcock and T. W. Duff. Owing to the Kanieri. traffic bridge beiirg out; of commission, all the traffic south is confined to the Arthur’s Town road, which is very narrow in places. Driy.ers, should . exercise care on this section, especially at night. -
