Sergeant A. Henderson, of Invercargill, is ths guest of Constable D. Austin, Greymouth.
Mr J. Mettrick, storeman at the railway goods shed, Greyniouth, has received notice of transfer to Christchurch.
Mr Justice Johnston, Mrs Johnston, and the Judge’s Associate, Mr W. W. King, arrived yesterday from Christchurch.
Passengers who returned to Greymouth by yesterday’s express included Messrs L. Carruthers, F. Kennedy. A. Johnston, Mrs A. Jamieson, and Miss Eileen Costello.
A Press Association message from Christqhurch reported the death of Mr W. A. Carpenter, aged 84 years, clerk to the Mount Herbert County Council for 24 years, and a former Mayor of Sumner. He was a wellknown horticulturist, and evolved the “Lord Kitchener,” a popular gladiolus.
In view of her approaching marriage to Mr J. Truman, the staff of Truman’s met Miss Verna W’ise, and presented her with an electric iron and a tea -set. Mr Parker made the presentation, and extended best wishes to the couple. Mr J. Truman replied on behalf of Miss-Wise and himself. The wedding will take place next Wednesday.
Lord Radon Powell, Chief Scout, accompanied by Lady Baden Powell, and the Hons. Heather arid Betty Baden Powell, will motor from Christchurch to the West Coast tomorrow. Their party also includes Colonel and Mrs Granville Walton and Mr N. Abbot. They will proceed to Hokitika, and on Thursday will visit the Glaciers; \
Sir Cecil Day, official secretary to tho Governor-General, who came to New Zealand 25 years ago as assistantprivate secretary to Lord Islington, has been granted leave of absence, in order to visit England. He will leave, with Lady Day, on .May 10, and expects to be absent till the end of the year.—Press Assn.
The death was announced at Dunedin yesterday of Mr William Ewart Gladstone, who retired IS months ago as Registrar of Electors for Parliamentary constituencies that embrace Dunedin &nd its neighbourhood, also as Dunedin Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, and as Returning Officer for the Chalmers electorate. He had previously served in the head office of .the Registrar-Gen-eral’s Department, his appointment in that department dating from 1924. Previously he was in the Health Department. He retired in October of 1933. —Press Assn.
The .death of Mr Daniel O’Leary, of Totara Flat, took place at the Reefton Hospital, this morning, after a lengthy ilness. He was born in Cork 75 years ago, and for the last 50 years had lived at Totara Flat, where, until his retirement, he was employed by the Railways Department. He is survived by his widow, three daughters. Mesdames .
Baillie (Lower Hutt),' Harley (Nelson) and Lucas (Sydney); also three sons, Arthur (Kopara), John (Totara Flat), and Clifford (Kotuku). Mr. Stephen O’Leary, Kotuku, is a brother. The interment will take place at Ahaura privately.
A Press Association message from Invercargill (reported the death of Mr. Robert Bauchop, aged 65 years, who was known in the sawmilling industry. He was a native of Port Chalmers, and was for several years in charge of his father’s extensive sawmilling interests in Otago and Southland. Two years ago he visited Britain with Mr. Entrican, of the Forestry Department, to establish 'trade in the export of silver beech, and since has been identified with that industry. Deceased was the brother of Colonel Bauchop, who was killed on Gallipoli, and Mr. Duncan Bauchop, manager of Leyland Motors.
