PRESS CONFERENCE
CABLE AND WIRELESS RATES [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. COPYRIGHT.] (Rec. February 26, 1 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, February 25. Arising out of a resolution passed at Cape Town, that a committee proceed to London, to endeavuor to bring about a prompt review of-Press cable and beam rates, and the utilisation of surplus capacity by a low deferred rate of one pennj r per -word, the Press Conference to-day appointed a committee which includes the.. New Zealander, Mr. George Kerr, and the Australians,. Messrs McCay and Dumas. Consideration is being given to the question of the inclusion and scope of cable-rated picturegrams. Aftei* a lively discussion, the conference adopted a resolution inviting the attention, of the Empire Press Union to the increasing efforts being •made to, exploit editorial columns by means of disguised advertising. In the interests both of the pflblic and the Press, the Conference called upon newspaper executives to exercise rigid scrutiny, in order to ascertain the underlying purpose received for publication. The Conference decided that, in order to maintain effective continuity of the Empire Press Union’s activities during the five-year interval between conferences, there should be annual meetings of a committee of members of the Union, selected annually in each section. The following basis was selected: Britain, including Northern Ireland, six members to be selected; Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, African and Indian sections, two each, from anv other Dominion where a section of the Union exists, two members; from members in other parts of the Empire, one each.
