Referring to the Magisterial decision classing Honore de Balzac’s “Droll Stories” as “indecent,” Professor Thompson, of Otago University, said the statement by the defence that the book was necessary for students was nonsense. Balzac wrote nearly 100 novels, all nearly first-class, and students had plenty of scope without opening Contes Drolatiques, which he agreed catered for the lascivious mind.—Press Assn.
