[special to “stab.”] Ip » * ' " CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting, to be held at Riccarton to-morrow, is likely to attract a large attendance of racegoers, as an interesting card will be? t presented, and sonje excellent racing is promised. The track is at present carrying a strong sole of grass, following artificial watering during the past month, and the. going will be good, but fast. The win and place system of speculation will again be in use. The programme is as follows: —

The Hornby Handicap, decided under high-weight conditions, has drawn the usual good field for this class of evdnt, and the issue appears very open. There is no doubt that Imi perial Spear will be favourite, as he raced very well during the holidays, and will have the services of a good horseman, a big factor in these races. Ranelagh and Aesculus hold the distinction of contesting the last New Zealand Cup, but their form then and since would not joint to their prospects even in this company. Doiran won at Waikouaiti, and may be dangerous here in spite of his poor track ' displays. Rin Tin Tin won at the recent Wairio fixture, and Jerry Boy beat Haere Tonu at Hororata, while Hot Stuff ran second to Palatinate at Trentham last month, a good performance. The best supported will probably be IMPERIAL SPEAR RIN TIN TIN HOT STUFF

have never won a race to the value of 50 sovs., should provide an interesting contest; as there are no winners in the fidld, the only possible exception being Marquillo, whose successes, however, have been attained at nqn-totalisator meetings. There are others who have shown promising form, both in races and on the tracks, these including Lowater, Madam Pompadour, Rose of Tralee, Coat of Arms, Colombo, Gas Mask, Rotokino, Back Thrust, Chidden and Honeste. Of these the most sought after may be * COLOMBO COAT OF ARMS BACK THRUST

The number of starters in the Middle Park Plate will be restricted, but quality is well represented, and there should be a close tussle. Bun Fight raced prominently at Ellerslie over the holidays, but was out of form at Trentham. Two-year-olds have had a good innings in recent years in this race, and Bun Fight would appear to be capable of worthily representing her division. Emissary attracted attention by his good race in the Wellington Stakes last month, but was stopping at the end of five furlongs. There is no doubt about his ability to .'gallop, as instanced by his sprint over half a mile yesterday. Six furlongs, however, may find a weakness in him. Invoice won twice over the distance during the holidays, and will be on hand to-morrow. Greek Shepherd renuires racing, while Hanlon, trained at Mosgiel, has a placed performance to his credit only. Speculation will probably be confined to bun fight invoice EMISSARY

The eight carded for the Midsummer Handicap give promise of providing one of the best contests in the history cf the race. Cuddle has made the trip from Hastings, and her form at the meeting will be followed with interest in view of her trip to Wingatui next week for the Dunedin Cup. She is, however, engaged also in the Craven Plate, and. at the time of writing there was no indication as to her programme. It can, nevertheless. be safely assumed that, -she will be in very keen demand for which evei race she tackles. Polydora has come right back to form, and will take a power of beating. Fracas failed over ten furlongs 'at Trentham, being some ten lengths away from Cuddle at the finish ot their race on the concluding day. Minerval has been gradually coming on, but is hardly advanced enough to bo dangerous here. Toqt le Monde is well, and has only to race up to his Manawatu form to cause trouble. Silver Sight has to bo seriously considered, but would be more in favour with a stronger horseman aboard. Neither Cleaner nor Final Shot look likely in this field. Investors will show most confidence in CUDDLE POLYDORA , SILVER SIGHT

ithe Halswell Handicap, several of those carded having figured prominently at recent meetings. Top Rank has not done much for some time past, and he must be considered somewhat flattered in his position as No. 1, and in having to give the next horse to him lOlbs. He will have to show considerable improvement to pay a dividend. Hostis is the form horse, and will probably go out first choice. Moonbeam and Elloughton are entitled to respect, while Bella Rosa has been galloping well of late, and Epris and Quebec have winning Coast form to their credits. Speculation will take a wide range, and the final summing up may be in favour of HOSTIS MOONBEAM ELLOUGHTON 4.20 p.m.

Nightly’s reappearance in the Craven Plate will create widespread interest in view of his return visit to Australia. He is a class above' this field, but it has to be admitted that he has not been finishing on in his recent gallops toe well, and is probably in want of a, race or two. This would be an easier race for Cuddle than the Midsummer Handicap, and her rehandicap for the Dunedin Cup would not be as severe as if she won the longer race. Southdown seems well eno.ugh, but will not be in very keen demand. Gaysome has the pace, but is too doubtful a proposition over the early part of her races . Grecian Prince was probably never better than at present, and has to be seriously regarded. Scratchmere Scar has executed some highly attractive gallops in recent weeks, that with Nightly yesterday being outstanding. This should be a keen betting race, and the favourite division is likely to be comprised of NIGHTLY , . CUDDLE SCRATCHMERE SCAR x 5 p.m. Lyttelton Plate, two-year-olds, 5 furlongs:—

Unfortunately there will be a very small field for the two-year-old event, the Lyttelton Plate, but there will nevertheless be a close dispute for favouritism. Form to date points to the prospects of SILVER COAT PENELOPE ABDICATION 5.35 p.m.

The eight carded for the Post Handicap are likely to parade, and .patrons can look forward to another interesting tussle. Knock Out has the best credentials, and no doubt will be favourite. Those in request will be KNOCK OUT IMPORTANCE WEATHERLY AT ROTORUA TO-MORROW. 11 ! THE FIELDS AND PROSPECTS. The Rotorua Racing Club will open its annual meeting to-morrow, concluding on Monday. Fields are large; made up from horses that raced at the recent Takapuna and Matamata meetings. Horses expected to be prominent in engagements are: — Pohmti Hlghweight: Barn Dance, Intaglio, Pliiakuo. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. February 9.—Wellington. February 16.—Kaikoura. February 16, 20.—Auckland. February 23—New Brighton. WELLINGTON RACE TO-MORROW. THE FIELDS AND PROSPECTS. The Wellington Trotting Club will stage a one-day meeting to-morrow. Fields are of handy size, and ,the material is there to provide a high standard of racing. The -acceptances, with a reference to prospects, are as follow: — Preliminary Handicap, 3.42 class, miles (trotters): — Earl Bingen .. scr Winsome Laddie scr Flotsam .. scr Blue and Gold 24 Header .. .. scr Guy o’ Mine .. 60 Renova .... scr The limit horses should provide the placings, two winners at Timaru, Renova and Winsome Laddie, being present. Header and Flotsam would only need to go steadily to prove more than equal to the others, but form is the best guide and that points to— WINSOME LADDIE, RENOVA. Woburn Trial Handicap, 3.43 class, li miles: — Casino .. .. scr Orleigh Mills .. scr Handicapper .. scr Guy Zolock .. 24 Harold Wrack . . scr . .Supertax .. . . 24 Levity .. . . scr Edgar Wallace .. 36 Native Son .. scr Casino was expected to run well at Timaru, but disappointed. He' disclosed fair form at Hutt Park last month, and is likely to show improved form to-morrow. Handicapper has had placings, and should now be ■ready for a win, if he is equal to it. Levity fell at Timaru. when going well. This class of company is not too strong for him, and he will be one of the favourites. Guy Zolock and Supertax have performed well at Hutt. Park, and hold claims for strong support. The three most likely may be— LEVITY, GUY ZOLOCK, SUPERTAX. February Handicap. 3.35 class. li miles: — Blondie . . scr Kort light . . scr Flintlock . . scr Royal de Oro . . 12 Grace McElwyn scr t'olene Parrish .. 12 Peter Mitchel) scr Midshipmaid . . SO Grace McElwyn is the most likely of those off the front, and Portlight may run well. Royal de Oro won in 3.21 at Forbury .Park, and is in such good order that he will again be hard to beat. Midshipmaid acts well on ‘grass tracks, ami is not too far back to keep her out of a place. It looks like — GRACE McELWYN, ROYAL DE ORO, MIDSHIPMAID. Dominion Handicap, 3.25 class. 11 miles: — Bracken .. .. scr Fernbrook Lass 12 Jimmy de Oro .. scr Little Nelson .. 12 William Tell .. scr Mocast .. 12 Young Frank .. scr Somerby .. is The distance of this race has been I reduced from two miles. Bracken will go solidly but not overfast. Jimmy de Oro is unrelialil’e at the peg. William Tell is the smartest of the limit quartette, but in Agile he will meet a difficult opponeut. Fernbrook Lass

is in good company and Little Nelson and Mocast should beat her. Somerby is not supported. The three best raaj AGILE, LITTLE NELSON. MOCAST. Koro Koro Handicap* (trotters), 4.57 class, 2 miles: — Earl Bingen ~. scr Winsome Laddie scr Flotsam .. scr Derby Thorpe .. 12 Header .. .. scr Guy o’ Mine .. 72 Renova .. .. scr Running in the opening event will guide investors to prospects here, Derby Thorpe being the only newcomer, and a good one. He has not raced for nearly a season, but he gave Guy o’ Mine 12 yards and a beating over two miles, at Wairarapa a little over twelve months ago. If near his best, he should beat this opposition, and as they now stand, the favourites may be— DERBY THORPE, HEADER, WINSOME LADDIE. Suburban Handicap, 3.5 class, 1.1 miles: — Casino .. .. scr Plutus . . .. scr Handicapper . . scr Trevor de Oro scr Harold Wrack scr Jean Parrish .. 12 Levity .. .. scr Silver Berry .. 12 Mamaku .. .. scr Supertax .. .. 21 Native Son .. scr Edgar Wallace 36 Over the distance, good efforts can be expected from Levity, Handicappci’, Casino, Silver Berry and Supertax, with three likely ones in — LEVITY, HANDICAPPER, SILVER BERRY.
