GAMING HOUSES ALLEGED. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] .AUCKLAND, January 1. As a sequel to raids by detectives on premises in the city on Monday and to-day, four men appeared in the Police Court on charges of keeping common gaming houses. A plea of guilty was entered by Alfred Matthews, 52, dealer. Accused was lined £3O, with costs. A Hindu denied a charge of beingfound in a common gaming house without lawful excuse, and the information was dismissed. A charge of keeping a common gaming house was preferred against Douglas Hopkins, 40, tobacconist. He was remanded for a week, bail of £lOO being allowed. Four men found on tho premises were each lined £2. Foui' men were arrested to-day, following raids by detectives, and appeared later in the Police Court. Stanley Thomson was charged with keeping a common gaming house. A smiliar charge was preferred against George Geelong Paul. Both were remanded, bail of £lOO being allowed in each case. Two men charged with being found without lawful excuse in a common gaining house were also remanded.
