GREY v. WESTLAND A Greymouth representative team visited Kanieri yesterday, and secured a win on the first innings over the Westland representatives. The weather was warm, and the wicket (matting over pug) in fair order. The ground was small, and rather rough. Greymouth won the toss and elected to field, Morgan and Ogilvie opening to the bowling of Mathews and Simmonds. Ogilvie batted a long time foi his 21, top score, and while he watched the ball well, and displayed sound defence, he did not inspiie confidence. Fleming hit hard to score 18, while Thomas, the Westland skipper, with a laboured 12, was next on the list. Baird, who made only 7, looked the'best of the home, batsmen. All the visiting bowlers made some life out of the wicket, and anything short rose sharply. Cornish was the most successful, taking 3 for 14, off 8 overs, while Rapley secured 3 for 21, and Dewar 2 for 3. In the absence of N. Bayley, Restieaux kept wickets for Greymouth. Seven Westland wickets were down with 73 runs on the board at the luncheon adjournment, but all weie out for 91 about ten minutes after the resumption after lunch. Morris and Restieaux put on 25 for the first wicket, before Restieaux was caught behind, swinging at what was almost a full-tosser. Only three more runs had been added, when Morris went, hitting a half-pitcher on the leg side, into the hands of square leg. Marshall and Heasley then became associated, and put on 103 before they were separated. Heasley hit hard to top-score with 53, but he has played much better innings. He was lucky

in , that he was out 1.b.w., when no appeal was made, before he had made many runs. Marshall was slow, but solid, getting 15, and Simmonds hit hard to score an unbeaten 21. Griffiths was the most successful of the Westland bowlers, taking 4 for 27, off 18 overs, while Morgan, a left hander, secured 4 for 28, off 9 overs. Stapleton was the best of the others, taking 2 for 36, and maintaining the most consistent .length. Griffiths worked up a good deal of pace on his first visit' to the crease, but was hardly accurate enough. Westland batted again, and at 6.30, when stumps were drawn, had scored 117 for 5 wickets (Ogilvie 30 retired, Whitehead 25). Scores: — Westland —First IJnnings; Morgan b.
