I CHRISTCHURCH TRIAL- MEETING. I [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 29. I The national athletic trials, to enable the selection to be made of a New Zealand team to visit Melbourne, to comnete against representatives of Australia, Great Britain and Finland next month, was held at Lancaster Park to-day. Although the’failure to take pait. of most of the. North Island athletes nominated robbed the meeting of much interest, New Zealand champions over every distance, ircm 100 yards to one mile, were challenged tor the right of selection, and this made the contests exciting. Results: — 100 yards: J. B. MacFarlane (Canterbury) 1; V/. J. Fitzsimmons (Wellington) 2; G. Quinn (Hawke’s Bay) Also ran: J. Carmichael (Canterbury). G. C. Gordon (Canterbury). Time 10 l-ssec. 220yds: .1- B. MacFarlane (Canterbury) 1; W. .L Fitzsimmons (Wellington)’ 2; J. Carmichael (Canterbury) 3. G. Quinn (Hawke’s Bay and G. C. Gordon (Canterbury) did not start. Time 22 3-ssecs. 440yds Hurdles: A. T. Apcierson (Canterbury) 1; W. Maunder (Canterbury) 2.- Only starters. Time 59 3-ssecs. One mile. —L. McLachlan (Otago) 1, A. C. Pullar (Otago) 2; C. H. Matthews (Canterbury) 3. Also started: M. R. Robinson (Canterbury), A. 11. Wayman (Canterbury), T. Bartlett (Canterbury). Time 4.25 1-5. SOOyds: T. G. Broadway (Canterbury) 1; D. F. The following team was selected this evening to represent New Zealand in Melbourne: — J. B. MacFarlane (Canterbury), 100 yards and 220 yards. T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), 440 yards and BSO yards. L. C. McLachlan (Otago), 880 yards and one mile. • H. K. Brainsby (Auckland). Hop, Step and Junip, and Long Jump. F. Sbarplcy (Hawke's Bay), 120 yards Hurdles. 100 yards and 220 low Hurdles (if held). T. J. Crowe (Wellington), High Jump, Hop, Stop and Jump and Long Jump. For the three miles, A. R. Wilson (Auckland) . and C. H. Matthews (Canterbuiy) will be asked to run in a further trial, possibly at Napier at a date not yet fixed. If there is a walking race at the games at Melbourne, J. Driscoll (Hawke’s Bay) will-make the trip.
