NEW YEAR RACING
THE FIELDS ENGAGED G.J.C. IS COAST ATTRACTION Nine Clubs will hold meetings in New Zealand to-morrow, and a similar number on Wednesday. For the West Coast, the attraction will be provided by the Greymouth Jockey Club, which will stage its summer fixture, on both days. The Canterbury Park Club will be the only trotting club to hold a meeting, but five of the galloping clubs, have two light harness events included in their programmes for each day. The fields, with prospects and starting times, are here given.
BETTING SYSTEMS. The following- systems of betting will operate at the New Year meetings:— SINGLE POOL—lst and 2nd. Greymouth J. C. Auckland R.C. Wairarapa. R.C. Waikouaiti R.C. Marton J. C. (three dividends) Canterbury Park T.C. (Ist and 2nd.) WIN AND PLACE. Oamaru J.C. Wyndham R.C. Hawke’s Bay J.C. Southland R.C. Stratford R.C.—Place, 75-25. AT OMOTO TO-MORROW THE FIELDS AND PROSPECTS The Greymouth Jockey Club has received satisfactory acceptances for the first day of its summer meeting, which opens at Omoto racecourse to-morrow. With few exceptions, the gallopers were seen out at Hokitika but form there is not always a reliable guide, i owing to the going being the opposite way round at Greymouth. The track is in fast order, and much rain would require to fall, before it would be noticeably affected. Additional accommodation has been provided for the tearooms, the entire lower floor of the grandstand now being available. A new booth has been built to replace the extra space taken for the tearooms. Patrons of to-morrow’s meeting can look forward with confidence, to an interesting afternoon of racing. The programme will be run off strictly to schedule, the totalisator being closed at the advertised times for each event, so that the public would be well advised to make investments within reasonable time, and thereby assist the Club to stage a pleasurable gathering.

Sundancer, Acevedo, Arrow Win, and Quebec, did not race at Hokitika. On recent efforts two worthy of consideration are Sisterina Rotokino 1.15. COUNTY HACK HANDICAP, 1 mile:
The distance will suit Imperial Spear, Patrole, Rose Vai and Arctic Star, best of those engaged, and a likely pair are Patrole Arctic Star. 2.35. GREYMOUTH CUP, 15 miles.—
Semper Paratus has but to be caught in the mood and he will carry his 10.0 close to victory. Riri will need to be at 'his best. He was sore on the first day at Hokitika, and the hard track will not assist him. Imperial Spear and Weatherly do not appeal in this field. Monipere held a big advantage over the opposition by his excellent handing of the course at Hokitika. He will find it much more difficult, to win to-morrow. Little Doubt, —not on the hard track, Earthquake was finishing on well in her races last week, and Coomassie will run a useful mile and a quarter. Lady Rene does not appear to be well placed here. Wiro has but to stay, and he will prove hard to beat, under his light weight. The right-handed going was against him at Hokitika where he ran wide out all the way. The best may be Semper Paratus Monipere 3.15. PAROA HACK HANDICAP. 6£ fur-
Wise Choice lias a good horse’s weight to carry, but he is very well just now, and will go a good race. Animated disappointed on Saturday, yet should be prominent on her home track. Arrowmid will be sought after. Royal Sceptre could not handle the right-handed going at Hokitika, but even taking that into consideration does not make him a good choice over six and a-half furlongs. Cheap Money was all at sea, at Hokitika, and can' lie expected to make an improved showing. Forceful cannot be recommended, and the pair chosen are Wise Choice, Arrowmid. I 3.55. This is a weak-class field and offers good prospects for Wino if started here, but in his absence good efforts may come from Arrowrose, Rose Vai. 5.15. BRUNNER HACK HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.— ’
Haulbowline will come up fresh, and well for the circuit, and can be looked to for a good effort here. Wise j Choice if started will have a large i following, and Earthquake and Lady ! Rene should perform well. The pair ! selected are — ; Haulbowline, Earthquake. WINNERS OF GREYMOUTH CUP. The fortieth contest for the Greymouth Cup will take place to-morrow. Thorndale, who set a record of 2.7 4-5, under 10.7, which still stands, won his Cup on December 31, 1927, so that there was no contest during 1928, the succeeding Cup races being held on January 1, 1929, onwards. The next fastest time for the race was established by Ravine, which carried 9.4, and ran 2.8 3-5 on January 1 of this year. So to. two aged horses goes the credit of setting the best times. Mr. W. J. Jeffries, who has Monipere engaged in the event to-morrow, won with Wharfedale in 1923. Mr. D. H. Roberts, who would have had Sky Rover engaged, but for the horse being galloped on in the Hokitika Handicap on Wednesday last, won the Greymouth Cup in successive years, with The Cornet (1915). and Slogan (1916). Mr R. Adamson won with Riri in 1933, and will attempt to repeat the success tomorrow. V. Lee and J. W. MONIPERE WINS CUP. Favoured with another perfect day, the Westland Racing Club concluded its midsummer meeting, at Hokitika, on Saturday. The attendance was satisfactory, and a substantial increase on gate receipts, in comparison with last year, was returned. First day form proved reliable in the galloping events, and apart from Kevino, which finished in second place in the opening event, dividends were those from strongly supported runners. Monipere cantered home to win the Westland Cup, and handled the right-handed course better than any other galloper at the meeting. This ability proved a big advantage to him. His successes brought credit to his trainer, C. J. Walshe, of Omoto, who has had charge of Monipere during the past few- months. He carried the condition that enabled him to run strong races, and was a two hundredweight heavier horse than when trained by'other hands. He presents himself as a likely Douro Cup contender. The conduct of the meetingleft little to be desired, the improvements on the past method of working the jockeys’ board being appreciated. The totalisator showed a substantial increase on the figures for the second' day last year, which was, however, a losing venture, owing to a very small attendance. Saturday’s figures totalled £4287, against £31171, an increase of £11691, making the total for the meeting, £85491, an increase of £1221 on last year. The starting of the fields was unsatisfactory. Splendid opportunities of despatching the horses were allowed to pass by the starter, and delays were unnecessarily long. Seldom did ft field get away on even terms, and the prospects of several runners were eliminated at the rise of the barrier. Inefficient, starting at race meetings affects the totalisator returns, and also makes owners hesitant about including t heir horses at such meetings. Nothing settles dissatisfaction on the public more firmly than poor starting, and an efficient paid starter is an asset to a club, where an honorary inefficient starter proves a loss. In fairness to the Westland Club’s starter, however, it must be pointed out that those of the public who are allowed, and do station themselves in front of the horses at the six and five and a-half furlong posts, during the time the field is being brought into line, are an annoyance to the horses. The Club should debar encroachment at those starting points, and it was a matter for surprise that the starter, seeing the difficulty he had in hand- • ling the fields, did not order the public away. !
In all other respects, the Club’s meeting went off smoothly, and none worked harder towards the success of the gathering than Mr D. J. Evans, the capable secretary. With a shorter lime between races, the next meeting of the Club should prove even morepleasurable to the public. The Hokitika Municipal Band rendered another appropriate programme.
