MR. D. G. SULLIVAN INJURED FALL ON HILL [per press association.] CARTERTON, December 31. Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., Mayor of Christchurch, was brought to the hospital at Featherston late last evening. He was camping along the upper reaches of the Tauwerenikau river. Yesterday at noon, he left the camp to. go for a walk in the hills. While crossing a gravel slide, he slipped, faling a considerable distance over the stones. He managed to make camp, suffering great pain. He was later examined by Dr. Berney. Three ribs were broken and the muscles were torn. He was conveyed by car to kelvin Private Hospital, after a slow journey arriving at midnight. The latest report is that he is doing satsifactorily, and should be about in a few days. WOMAN FATALLY SHOT. TAUMARUNUI, December 31. At the inquest into the death of Ethel McCann single, 29, who died at the Taumaruiui hospital on Saturday, following injuries received to her head, when a shotgun, being loaded by her brother, accidentally exploded, at her home at Tauringamotu on Friday, Owen McCann, 20, deceased’s brother gave evidence that the gun unaccountably exploded as he closed the breach. He purchased the gun on the previous day. Medical evidence showed a pellet from the charge entered the skull, deeply embedded in brain, causing the death by haemorrhage of the brain. The verdict was accidental death, with no blame attachable to any one. , MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED. DUNEDIN, December 29. Gordon Alexander Leslie, single, aged 22, sustained fatal injuries in a fall from a motor cycle on the Highcliff Road last evening. He was found lying on the road and died en route to the hospital. Medical evidence at the inquest, which was adjourned, was that death was due to a fracture of the skull and dislocation of the neck. LAD SHOT. MASTERTON, December 30. A thirteen-year-old lad, named Eric Wilson, son . of William Wilson, of Wangaehu, was admitted to Master-) ton Hospital yesterday in a fairly serious condition, as the result of the accidental discharge of a pea rifle that he was carrying. The bullet entered his groin, and as yet it has. not been removed from his back, were it lodged. There is a slight improvement in his condition to-night.

PEA-RIFLE VICTIM. NELSON, December 31. The death has occurred of Winifred Kathleen Rowling, aged 19, daughter of Sydney Rowling of Riwaka, as the result of the accidental discharge of a pea-rifle last week, which she took to drive away starlings from the house. She slipped on the steps, the rifle discharging and a bullet entering her abdomen. BRITAIN’S CAR-VICTIMS. LONDON, December 28, The road deaths caused in London during the week ending on Saturday last,' December 22, totalled 43, which is seventeen above the number of the previous week, and six above the previous record for any week. The Transport Ministry blames the Christmas traffic. There were 160 killed and 4,305 injured during the same week throughout Britain, which is seven fewer in the killed, and 110 more in the number injured than for the previous week.

JAP. STUDENTS DROWNED. TOKIO, December 29. Ten medical students belonging to the North-east Imperial University were all drowned off Sendai, while practising in a racing boat. The boat capsized amid a raging snowstorm at the Matsushima Islands, which are famous for their scenery.
