Mr T. Halliday, Runanga, left today on holiday to. Christchurch.

Mrs C. Baxter, Christchurch, spending a holiday in Greymouth.

Mr F. W. Kerr who has been visiting the West Coast, returned to-day to Napier.

Mr and Mrs F. Booth, Timaru, are spending a holiday on the West Coast.

Mr A. Wilson, who has been visiting South Westland glaciers, returned today to Cromwell.

Mr T. W. Webber returned to-day to Auckland, after a holiday on the West Coast.

The death is announced from London of Sir Arthur Fell, ex M.P. He was born at Nelson (N.Z.) in 1850.

Mr and Mrs C. J. Strongman and Miss Esme Strongman returned on Saturday, from Christchurch.

A London cablegram stated that Cardinal Bourne is in a critical condition after two years’ illness.

The death is .announced from Hollywood, of Mr Lowell Sherman, film director and actor, from pneumonia. He was forty-seven years of age.

A London cablegram announced that Sir Austen Chamberlain’s daughter Diana, is affianced to Mr Arthur Maxwell, a son of Brigadier-General Sir Arthur Maxwell.

The death has occurred at Nelson, of Mr Louis J. Frank, J.P., a director of Buxton and Coy., Ltd., with whom he had been for 55 years, 37 as director. He was a past Chief Ranger in the Forester’s, and took a leading part in horticultural matters. —Press Assn.

A Melbourne cablegram announced the death of Martha Elizabeth Anne Deakin, aged seventy-two, widow of Alfred Deakin, a former Prime Minister of Australia. Mrs Deakin was widely known for her philanthropic work, particularly in connection with returned soldiers.

The marriage took place on Saturday last, at Holy Trinity Church, of Iris Eileen, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Turk, of Blackball, to Ernest James, third son of Mr and Mrs J. C. Wilson, Cobden. Archdeacon Jermyn officiated. Mr and Mrs Wilson left for Christchurch.

A London cablegram announced that Lord Hewart, the Chief. Justice of England, had been married by special license at the village church in Totteridge, to Miss Jean Stewart, whose mother is a New Zealander. The bride is a cousin of Sir William Barclay Peat, who is a, neighbour of Lord Hewart, The bride’s mother, who is a member of a well-known Wanganui family, is resident in New Zealand. Her father, James Reid Stewart, is dead. Only, friends of the family attended the wedding, including Sir James Parr. Lord Hewart’s first wife died tragically on November 3, 1933, at a London social gathering.
