“FIRST FOLIO” FOR £1,950
NEW YORK DEALER’S BARGAIN. NEW YORK, November 10. A Shakespeare “First Folio” went for the remarkably small sum of £1,950 at the sale here of the late Rev. Dr. Roderick Terry’s well-known library. Mr. Gabriel Wells, a prominent New York dealer, was the buyer. Mr. Wells told me to-day of his delight. “It is an exceptionally fine copy, and when it is remembered that the Rosebery copy fetched £14,500 in London, you can understand that I have a real bargain.” “Dr. Terry’s First Folio must be worth much more than I had to pay. and, indeed, I wah prepared to bid much higher. Its only defects are the absence of the ‘To the Reader,’ and title leaves, which are in facsicile and pen-and-ink restoration, and of the imprint and border at the lower edge of the last page. “The texL itself is perfect, and I expect to sell without difficulty to a collector in Washington.” Mr. Wells also bought a fine copy of the Third Folio for £450, and a copy of the rare second edition of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” for £290. ’ The sale of books from Dr. Terry’s library has so far produced a total of £45,000. Outstanding items in yesterday’s session included a Shelley letter of 140 words, dated Oct. 2, 1816, at £175; a Shakespeare Fourth Folio l (£159), and a Second Folio (£115). | ,A copy of “The First, and Second 'Part of the Troublesome Raigne of King John of England,” attributed to Marlowe, Greene and Peel, from which Shakespeare derived “King John,” was sold at. £145; R. L. Stevenson’s copy of “Pilgrim’s Progress” at £lO5, and a presentation copy of Charles Lamb’s first play, “John Woodvil, a Tragedy,” at £175. '
