The grain trade is experiencing a very quiet time. There is practically no movement in the cereal or seed market, except for fowl feed and this is in small volume. Some wheat is being offered by farmers, but there is very little of milling quality left in farmers’ hands. Fowl wheat is remaining firm at 3/9A f.o.b.s.e. Samples of oats are expected before the holidays, but there is no interest in their arrival. Stocks on hand are quoted at 2/5 f.o.b.s.e. for A. Gartons and 2/2 for B’s. There is more interest in duns, which are quoted at 2/9 to 2/10 f.o.b.s.i. Busines in oats is negligible. No forward business is reported in potatoes. The small seeds market is lifeless, merchants new season’s seeds before sacrificing stocks on hand, most of which were bought at high prices. However, the new seeds will come on a fairly bare market. The Worksop dredge return was 44 ounces for 137 hours, 7520 yards. BRIAN BORU GOLD DREDGING Owing to the main ladder line of Brian Boru dredge requiring repairs, the dredge has been closed down, and will not resume dredging until the New Year. There will be no wash-up this week. ADDISON’S FLAT. WESTPORT, December 13. The Addison’s Flat Gold Mining Company’s return for the fortnight, ended Saturday, December 8, was 9oz 17dwt of gold for twelve shifts. Twenty-four shifts were lost, owing to shortage of water. BIG RIVER GOLD MINES. Report for week ending, December 13:—No. 3 crosscut: Distance driven six feet. A band of slate 2 feet wide was crossed during the week. The country is again grey sandstone. No. 4 North Drive: Total distance driven 70 feet. Reef is much harder and wider, being fully 5 feet 6 inches of clean stone. The stope looks well. No. 4 South Drive: Total distance driven 48 feet. The reef has widened to 9 feet. Gold freely seen. Battery: Crushing was resumed on December 11, and will be continued three shifts until the stone or water is exhausted, or to Wednesday, December 19, when the clean-up takes place.
