HOKITIKA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, December 15. At a meeting of the Hokitika Swimming Club and the Hokitika Surf Club on Thursday night, it was resolved to merge the two clubs, and the new club to be known as the Hokitika Amateur Swimming and Surf Club. Messrs G. Delbridge and M. Houston Junr., were appointed honorary secretaries of the new club. Prior to commencing business the Surf Club made a presentation to Mr R. L. Horn, who leaves shortly for Raratonga. Mr R. Lynn made the presentation and referred to Mr Horn’s good work in the institution of the Club and his work as instructor. At the Hokitika Borough Council meetin glast evening, the town water supply and reticulation came in for special notice. The Mayor stated that Lake Kanieri, owing to the long spell of fine weather was almost the lowest on record, and was falling at the rate of one inch per day. The intake pipe for the town supply was but four inches before the surface, and if the fine weather continued for another week or two the lake would be too low for the intake pipe. He, in company, with the Overseer had visited the lake, and with Mr P. Renton, had made survey of the position. This can be met by installing a Diesel engine at the lake and pumping the water into the supply pipes there. This,’ however, was only suggested as an emergency means, but he considered it wise to be prepared for such emergency. The Council concurred with the Mayor, who was thanked for his report. The Mayor was authorised to make all necessary preparations for installing the pumping plant when it is deemed advisable.

In connection with the water supply, the Town Clerk reported that an inspector has been making the rounds of the town, and it was surprising the number of leaky taps there are and extravagance in the use of the water. It is also suggested that meters be used at some of the hotels and other places where an excessive amount of water is used. Also the question of straightening the pipe line from the Lake to the reservoir came under review. The Overseer reported that a much better route avoiding the gullies and hills could be found, and the supply of water by such would be greatly increased. The Engineer who had laid the line considered it would be more convenient to have the pipe line follow the road, but Air Chesterraan (foreman) said the pipes can easily be snigged to the proposed line. The Council recently has been engaged in relaying the line of pipes in Fitzherbert Street, rendered nccssary by the tar-sealing of that street. It was decided to put on extra labour to have the leaks repaired before the holidays.
